If you've had another BAAAAAAAAAAAAAD China day, what do you do to comfort yourself?
I buy a puppy for 50 RMB and see how far I can kick it. Then I take it to the nearest restaurant and sell it so I can recoup some of my money.
Then I compare my day to the day that puppy is having and I feel much better.
Hypnos:
Worse than the puppy's, is you being the one that ends up eating it in the restaurant
When I have a really bad China day (which is less frequent now, but when they hit, they hit with a fury), I go over to a huge, local park across the street from where I live. Lots and lots of green space; groves of trees, open fields, a large lake, plenty of walking trails. Because of the parks size, you can find little corners that are off the beaten path so that you can relax. I like to sketch, so this is a great place to spend a few hours (or a day) drawing.
Another reason why I go there after a BCD is because everyone there is having a good time, and all I see are people smiling and getting out into the sunshine. No crazy drivers, no scooters trying to run you down, no scammers, etc. This park has saved my sanity a few times since I've been in China.
GuilinRaf:
This is a great idea, the part of seeing people having a good time and picking up their good vibe!
What I often do, is get some western junk food and maybe a beer or two when I get home, though I usually avoid drinking when angry or depressed as oftentimes I just feel worse later.
I also will google comic strips online (Calvin adn Hobbs, Beetl Baily, FAmily Circus, etc). The general silliness is good for laughs and sometimes they have very clever insights!
Watching movies helps.
If possible, I will talk to friends either in person or online though this can be delicate as many of my western friends who have never been to China will often respond "well, why do you stay in that sh*t hole...?" or my Chinese friends will not understand, or worse, feel offended.
And , if all else has failed, I take a cue from when I was a kid, go to bed and take a nice long nap.
Same as GuilinRaf, junk food and maybe one beer. That's all it takes.
I usually take it as normal, life has two sides,it always shows either to us in turn. So, i' d watch a funny film while having a drink,or go out for a walk, then tomorrow will be a nice day again.
I usually go get a massage to relieve the tension..really helps if the masseuse is cute also.
Chocolate cake and red wine.

perfect, except I also include chocolate itself and chocolate ice cream

Dear Xpat John,
Next time I will give you 500 RMB and let me kick your balls.
crimochina:
you're a stupid retard. do you think he was telling the truth? if you are going to come an site designed for expats learn to take a pucking joke you moron.
Xpat.John:
That sounds like a deal, but you would need to find where my wife put them. I haven't seen them since I said, "I do."
GuilinRaf:
Sarcasm edmerz, sarcasm.....
I seriously doubt he actually kicks puppies. I am sure some on this site would, but i doubt Xpat John would be one of them....
I like to get out by myself, maybe a ride on my scooter while listening to oldies on my MP3, beer will help and I can drink and drive, mind you I never got drunk in China, beer is like water. At home if you get caught driving after half a beer, no tolerence, a day driving suspension.
I like to get drunk and watch movies (western of course)...at least that's my cure for a BCD.
Now when I have a BCGD (bad Chinese girlfriend day) that's when I head to the city and drink in my favorite expat bar until 3am.
Why is it that alcohol can solve sooo many problems?
when I have BD/BCD i put some music to MP3, and do go for a reeeeeeeaaaaly long walk, in the parks, and sometimes just across the city. Until I'm dead meat, which takes about 4-5 hours in 30+C heat
when I have a Good Day - I just walk, without MP3, with ears and eyes wide open to experience everything around me
that question was not expected but to say the truth i never tried to think about being comfortable or not
LAR:
Hi Crea,
Yeah, thinking about how comfortable one is can qualify as an important consideration. I mean, it depends on the person. What may be comfortable for one person, may be quite the opposite for another.
Certainly, living overseas and being away from home lends itself to finding ways to deal with things and be comfortable. :) (Whether through meditation,
alcohol,tv,talking with a friend,tea,exercise,positive thinking,etc.) Rock on!
Createach:
i understand what you mean and i want to show my appreciation for you comment and i want to think the question poster too...........now i kind think differently about so many things
I get in my car, open the sun-roof and a bottle of Jack Daniels, and take a nice long drive. Usually by a four in the morning I realize I don't actually own a car but by that time the JD and the long drive have out-run the blues.
Aaaah, sweet liquor eases the pain.
Tonight, I will see if the old adage is true: "Beer and Liquor, never been sicker"
