Hi Sammah !

Thanks for your advice, but I guess I need to give it to someone from the HR dpt, not to a random person right ? (I mean not to the receptionist ...)

Another question, are networking websites, just like LinkedIn, effective ?

Regards,

Charlie.

I think networking is the way to go. Nowadays, most of the lucrative jobs are found through connections and word of mouth. Many great jobs are not advertised anywhere.

Here are 4 well-known networking organisations:

The Executive Network (Contact executivenetwork@hotmail.co.uk for further information)
FC Connection Club (http://www.fcclub.com)
InterNations (http://www.internations.org)
Oriented (http://www.oriented.com)

More tips in the article below.

Yeah I did marketing and sales for awhile and it was one of the most difficult jobs but really rewarding. It depends on your level and since you said you have 1 year experience it could be difficult for you as most places want at least 2 to 3 years of experience. However, you could try some of the training schools out here. The marketing people that I've seen them put out on the streets aren't really that good and you can tell they have less than a year of experience. Try the training schools and see if you can be one of those marketing and sales guys.

Try the recruiting companies here like Michael Page (got my role with them here in Beijing), Robert Walters, Hays for example. Even though they mainly hire middle management and above they can set you on the right path in finding employment and give you tips on how to stand out from the crowd.

Calling them makes a big difference or going in person it shows you are keen and interested in the job compared to online. Even try writing down a few companies you are interested in, give the HR department a call express interest and ask for any openings that they may have.

If you try a job website think about how many Chinese and others are submitting resumes on that one job and the HR person will only pick out 20 or so resumes from the batch.

For your area of expertise, I would suggest Shanghai first. Plenty of jobs for Marketing and Sales. Shenzhen also, you can commute to Hong Kong if you have to and they look for different more diverse Expats from around the world

I don't want to give your hopes up. But if you are hoping for a good salary comparable to what you could make back home , don't give your hopes up.

If you are fluent in both Chiense and English then you have a big advantage.  Otherwise there a billion people in China looking for jobs and most likely there are a lot of them who have more experience than you AND are willing to work for very cheap.

Due to the large work force in China it's hard to find a non Teaching job because there is nothing that sets you apart from other people.  Teaching sets you apart because you are a NATIVE speaker, something Chinese people can never be.

To answer your question though, check out ads on this website and sites like thebeijiner.com .  If you can read Chinese check out Chinese websites.

I don't know the going rate for marketing type jobs but the two forigners I know in China who do marketing make 2,000rmb ($321usd) and 3,000rmb($481usd) a month. In a large city like Beijing it's very hard to live on that type of salary unless you're willing to live like Chinese people do (4-6 people in bunkbeds in one room in a run down apartment).

Best of luck to you and sorry for being so negative. Just trying to be brutally honest on the situation in China for non teaching jobs for foreigners.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
