Q: Best way to learn Cantonese in Guangzhou?

So I figured that, of all places, Guangzhou a.k.a. the city formerly known as Canton would be the easiest place to learn Cantonese, but I never see any Cantonese classes advertised anywhere, and locals seem to be just confused as to why I would even want to learn. Has anyone made a serious effort to learn Cantonese here and how did you do it?

I searched online, it says there are some private training schools which offer Cantonese classes. Ask your Chinese friends to help you get a good one, and not so far away from you.  I speak some Cantonese but I don't know how to teach, lol. I know how to teach Mandarin, but not Cantonese.

no suggestions for you, but wanna say you are great!

Cantonese is one of the world's most difficult languages. hope you'll have fun learning it.

Agree with the above that only private Cantonese classes are available in GZ. Or you can contact a few language schools in HK for course information if you are so keen to learn this dialect.

Get a Cantonese girlfriend or boyfriend. Classes are hard to come by. I also use this website for basic practice. http://www.cantonese.sheik.co.uk/

I know some Africans here can speak good Cantonese and mandarin,I was kinda shocked when I heard it at the first time.

My advice is,Just put yourself into the society, try to talk to more local people, especially old people, they have plenty of time to practice with you ,I am not Cantonese either, I can speak Cantonese after I moved here for 6 months, all i did was, talk to more local people, especially the old ones and enjoy making mistakes,at the beginning, It's pretty  hard even for a Chinese who's from other provinces.I am glad that I made it.

Here is a link for you to learn Cantonese.http://www.cantonese.sheik.co.uk/

I take Chinese classes here, and they have Cantonese, too. They're located in Zhujiang New Town.

Good luck!

I am a Cantonese speaker. I think you really should learn Mandarin first, but dont worry Cantonese is not that hard to learn. You don't have to take a course I think . just speak mor e with local people. 仲有,T港剧都work噶。(And watching TBV series also works)

Good luck for you.

I learnt my Cantonese by watching TV shows and learning a few Cantonese songs. There's a band called Beyond, 90s rock group from Hong Kong who helped me learn.

You know it's just like we tell chinese students to watch more English movies. That same rule can apply to learning a language like Cantonese. You should get several movies that are in cantonese with the option to choose English subtitles and try to learn a little from there. You could always pause the video which is why it's one of our best resources when learning! (Drunk!!

hi there. i am local. i speak cantonese, mandarin, and english. i taught  cantonese before, but just small stuff and simple conversation.  as far as i know, learning cantonese is much easier than madarin. because a lot of cantonese words are from english, a lot i mean A HELL LOT. so... its true that you can learn it from tv series. i dont recommend you to go to teaching institution. cause i have to tell you. there s no such official standard in teaching cantonese unless you find some old professor to learn from. make some friends would help.(not girlfriends unless you want to, otherwise it may end up bad lol).

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
