Q: Is Bing blocked now?

I was just on Reddit and lots of people are talking about it there and putting up links to the story.

It seems Bing is blocked now. If you don't have a working VPN your search options must be getting pretty barren now.

That's gotta suck.

I suspect the converation went thus..

China: we dont want western influence and data collection.

Microsoft: Should we send you a bill for every single licence key you have robbed? We need to cancel the keys.

China: What ban?

The problem is that the ppl making the rules are detached from reality. Their goal is to serve their masters with what they think they want. They are victims of their own censorship.

They cant grasp that they are using MS software to censor MS.

The censors honestly believe they are using Chinese tech to ban western crap.

Open China they say.. lets celebrate open China.Easy green cards.

The stupidity is that the censors dont even know what they are consoring.

With the winter olympics coming up.. I most strongly suggest the IOC cancell them if China does not unblock the internet.

Today was an example of over jealous stupidity.

I thought that was an era the Party did not want to repeat.

Or are they testing the water.. No idea.

The Bing ban was just fucking stupid.

Today we saw the party flex its muscles as it battles jack ma, who is both a hero and a threat. It is battling rich chinese who were made rich by the party, and who now speak against it. The simple solution would be to send a jet to Canada, go retrive their person. Send a ship even, a submarine, a rubber boat perhaps. What they shoud not be doing is what they done last night.

China Blocks Microsoft's Bing Search Engine

The reasons behind the block are a mystery...

Thu, 01/24/2019 - 06:20

As Google backs away from plans to introduce a re-engineered search engine to the Chinese market after provoking a chorus of scrutiny from lawmakers and its own employees, the Chinese government has abruptly blocked Microsoft's Bing from the Chinese Internet. The decision removes the only major foreign search engine left in China, according to the Financial Times. It makes Microsoft the latest US tech firm to be ousted from China since the Whatsapp messaging app was blocked in 2017.

While the website cn.bing.com couldn't be accessed from the mainland, the state remained accessible outside China.

The FT noted that the ban comes amid rumors that trade talks between the US and China are deteriorating (though China on Thursday backed up Larry Kudlow's claims that the talks were progressing as expected).

State-owned telecom China Unicom has confirmed the order came from within the government, which said it had spotted "illegal content" on the search engine, though it's still unclear what triggered the ban because China's Cyberspace Administration has refused to comment. However, the New York Times pointed out that the ban followed a viral social media post by former journalist Fang Kecheng, who accused dominant Chinese search engine Baidu - which sops up 70% of China's search traffic - of favoring its own products in its search results. The viral post is believed to have driven more traffic to Bing.

Friday in Shandong, Bing worked in Qingdao in the AM, Gaomi at noon, Jinan at 3pm.

Have a few cities to visit over the next seven days here, so far so good.

Google is my primary search engine (using my tried and true VPN). Bing is my secondary. If for some reason I can't access either of those, I'd use Yahoo.

Quinn68:

Actually, I guess Yahoo is powered by Bing, so it wouldn't make a difference. On the rare occasions my VPN stops working in China, it is up and running again within a matter of hours, so Google is almost always my search engine of choice.

The times I've had to use yahoo or whatever instead of google it just pissed me off. Google is the goto search engine for a reason.

Ok seems like the Bing block wasn't a serious attempt. Just as well, if everyone in China had to rely on Baidu they'd be right up the creek.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
