Q: Bringing in pets to China - how long is quarantine/any way to avoid it?
Friends of ours are coming to China in a few months times and have three dogs. They haven't even stepped foot in the country yet but are already very concerned about health/safety, and want to make sure the dogs get the best treatment possible.
With that in mind, they were wondering if animals brought to China had to be quarantined (if so, how long, what are the conditions like, etc.), or whether it could be avoided altogether.
They'll be headed for Shanghai, if that makes any difference.

Bringing pets to China is about the same as bringing pets into any other country. Suggest you Google "requirements for bringing pets into China" for detailed answers.
Besides proper documentation such as health certificate, record of vaccinations, etc, once pets arrive to China "supposedly" they are to be quarantined at your expense for 30 days. If everything checks OK, they will be released to you. There is no way around it, unless you have connections or lots of money for bribes. I also do know that there is a limit of two pets to import, so at least one dog should be under another person's name on the traveling party.
Once, a foreigner told me the walked into China with his dog on a leash at the border station between Hong Kong and Shenzhen, and thus avoided the quarantine. In all honestly, I do not think he did it at all, he is just boasting BS.
There are essentially 3 ways to import pets.,
1. You can hire an agent to ship them to Hong Kong, they are then driven over land to your destinations and this gets around the requirement to quarantine all together. (It is the most expensive route)
2. Hire an agent and ship directly to China (most agents can arrange for the 30 day quarantine to be performed by the owner in their own home after the animal has had a physical exam.
3. Ship the animal yourself and have a 30 day quarantine.
