Q: broke down and paying for VPN ...now what?

big deal for me... 2+ years without ......default server location was USA..... and speed was very good.....  figured (as advertised) closer server should be faster.......changed my location to asia............  speed dropped dramatically...........  is it normal for a US/North American server to be this much faster than even  Hong Kong or Seoul........China of course, I disregard as being potentially quick................  I'm in Guangdong.

already in trouble with my son on Facebook ..........hasn't missed me that much I guess.

I can VPN to different places and in terms of speed, different times of day requires different VPN servers. US is good in the morning, Korea in the afternoon and Europe in the evening.

I never knew that, that's good advice. I just always use LA. But will try the different ones. I usually judge VPNs by what I think of that country. As in, I always think the German one will work, the French one will be amazing for an hour and then crap for an hour etc etc. I know this isn't right, it's just the feeling I get from each one just before I click on it.

you have to experiment a bit with it. I have access to a lot of VPN points, and I am sure that they all are operational, but they are not all useful for someone in China. Time of day and provider and what web sites/services you need to access are all parameters in the game.

Yeah, closer is not always faster, in my experience Tokyo was sometimes one of the slowest servers I experienced, recently I almost exclusively use USA or Canada based servers as those seem to work more reliably for me. Another thing, again in my experience, less popular American cities work the best (Phoenix, Seattle and Denver) as opposed to the usual California based ones or New York. Try different locations and encryptions to see what works best for you.

Also, please stop writing with so many ellipses... it's so annoying... to... re...ad... ...

BHGAL:

thanks for the info, so gotta change servers regularly to fit my requirements, more complications in my life.

what are ellipses ?    them dots I put in there,I'm  not an English teacher obviously.

It also very much depends on your internet connection. For example at work I'm lucky to get 2-3 hours uptime on any one server at a time (sometimes they last for seconds before disconecting). While at home I've been using the same server for close to 4 months now with no problems. Internet in China is complicated to say the least.
