Q: Businesses closing so fast - relocating or actually going under?

My favorite little gaifan place at the corner of my street has suddenly closed. One day they were there, smiling and serving food to my place, and the next they were gone. Place empty. I called them to ask for "song waimai", but from what I understood, they weren't coming back.

I've seen this happen everywhere, and I honestly don't get it. Are they just relocating to a better spot in the city, or are all these small businesses actually going under?

I guess it's probably a bit of both.

An additional probability is one I have come across with quite a few small businesses, they are 'bought out' by a larger chain. It happened to a small supermarket near us, they delivered free to our neighbourhood and so were well used for this. Then one day my wife phoned to be told sorry we're closing today, when she asked why we were told they had been bought out. It turned out the new shop was one of a chain of stores and of course, they don't do deliveries.

i don't know, I wonder if some stores aren't cyclical, meaning they open for one thing at one time of year and another another. If that makes sense.

Many reasons for this.  Mostly they close because they can not afford to pay (or have the guanxi to avoid) the 'fees' the local enforcement groups make them pay.

Pity for that. There may be some reasons that we cannot tell clearly, e.g., the expiry of the place/house lease contract, the transfer of the place/house to a new owner who decides to suspend or terminate the lease, the return to their hometown for a better development or for some other reasons, or otherwise. Keep an eye on the following situation of the place/house, and then the answer may come out some day.
