Q: Busking in China?

I was walking down the street the other day and saw a Chinese muso singing into a mic and playing a guitar through a small amp. His guitar case was open and it was littered with coins and bills. Musta had 1,000 RMB in that case!

I thought to myself: "Hmmm, Red... I'd like to do something like that, too. Pick up some extra cash to pay for the gf's skin care products. Ha ha!" And then I thought: "Dang, I wonder if you need a permit to busk in China...."

Anyone know the rules? Is busking legal in mainland China? (I know it's legal in Hong Kong coz it came up in my google search a moment ago.)

If it is legal, as a foreigner with a real job, would busking contravene one's work visa and/or FEC?

I'm pretty sure the law (or lack of) varies from town to town, province to province, but I'm thinking, when the weather warms up and at the weekend, of taking my axe down to the seaside boardwalk or to within earshot of one of those high-tone, pedestrian-street shopping malls and giving it a go.

Anyone know?

Tips?

Hey Red, I've been thinking the same thing. Not for the money but to give the locals something to really, really stare at. Sort of reverse psychology I guess. I would put a hat out or my guitar case just for a joke. I reckon I could get away with it here.

Do it for charity. Go jam with someone already at it. Help them boost their income.

Here I see two categories of buskers. The handicapped unfortunate ones that certainly need help of some sort. Overweight high school students with signs saying they need money to pay for school. The first category, I fear are exploited by people skimming their earnings, and the second category I am sure takes a taxi to McDonalds to burn their earnings to grow even fatter.

A friend of mine recently busked around China and didn't meet any problems. In fact once a couple of policemen joined in on Hotel California (seriously, why is that the whole world has to know this song?????)
