Q: Buying an e-Bike in China?

Before I start looking. In the field of e-bikes is there any brands to avoid, to pick. What to look for.

Needs are pretty basic, range of 15Km, speed, naaah not in a hurry, 15Km/h would be enough. Need to be able to carry two people.

I went to where they sold scooters and just asked what the scooter was in each store, made a note like store #1, #2, I was told that GF would get a better deal that me, good at bargaining, We saw a white scooter and paid what they asked, end of story.

I like the Vespa looking styles. There is a bike with no body plastic, its a real scooter frame and the one i see can be converted back to a gas scooter. No body plastic does have some advantages.

Many bikes look identical, small shops make some from the same bodies and frames, but the guts are simple and mostly the same, some controllers are better than others. A bike is just the body, throttle, controller, batteries and wheel motor. i would get a bigger bike. 48 volt 20 amp, goes faster and farther than 12 amp batteries. 60 volt is better yet, 72 volt even. the Chinese don't seem to modify the bikes but at home, we do adding extra batteries and changing the controller, more volts gets speed, more amps gets distance. The 48 volt bike I had was great, it did 50 kmh, doubt that was accurate, but it moved, went up hills and got 60 kms distance. Some  batteries and better quality, lithium batteries last longer, there is also a silicone battery, but I don't know about the, Lead acid batteries will weigh about 70 lbs, lithium about 15 lbs. the weight of the bike has alot to do with speed and distance. I could lift my first bikes rear and drag it, the one I have now, I have trouble getting up on the side stand, harder to drag.

The smaller hub motors 350/500 watt are tooo slow. The 500/800 watt motors are better, There are even bigger motors. You can tell the difference, bigger looking wheel and tire, Another things is tires, those skinny tires ride and handle like a bicycle, 3:00x 10 is fatter. Wheel motors don't last forever, magnets fall off them and water can damage them.

What i wanted in my scooter was aluminum wheel and front disc brake, the first bike I bought had a steel wheel and drum brake, the brake didn't work great in heavy rain or deep water. I bent the front wheel, but straightened it by kicking, but I can do body work.

I wouldn't bother with a small bike, hard to carry two people, can't go up hills,no distance, who wants to drive 15 kmh? I can run faster than that.

I paid 2700 average for my scooter. I've had three. Just get 48 volt, 20 amp bike and make sure you can get it on the stand. My Gf has my first white vespa bike, batteries under the seat, had batteries stold twice, Batteries in the floor are easier to steal.

And buy a good bicycle helmet, better than any bike helmets i see, at least they have foam to absorb shock if they don't disintegrate. Helmets in China don't cut it at home, never pass an DOT inspection.

Brands may make a difference, but if they look identical model, not much difference. I notice Luyan sells for more, has a good name in China, but not at home.

Ted, whoa! Whoa! Stop typing, you win. Maybe you should write a blog about buying an e-bike in China?

(Seriously, no sarcasm.)

Maybe I'll try it. I've had motorcycles since I was a teen, first bike was 650cc. I like to ride even a scooter in China. I only like to ride in hot weather, At home the season is too short. Great way to stay cool. I often ride enough that my batteries get low. This is one of my serious posts, I know I don't often, No why !

First cycle was a 650? Too big for me to begin with. I love fast bikes and rode a few but I stopped because I go too fast.

There is no such thing as too fast. I never had a stock bike either. When I bought my first bike, I took it apart, made it into a chopper, build most of the parts myself and bought an airbrush and figured out painting. Most bike I've had were stripped as soon as I got home. I bought a Vette once and one of my friends jumped in for a ride and just started laughing. The dash was ripped apart. He said he knew I wouldn't just leave the thing alone.

I second the 48v 20aH model or bigger. You may not want to go fast or far but I like an e-bike with extra capacity in case I forget to charge it. Not that I would ever forget. Also if your bike does 50 kph you can still ride it slower and conserve your battery charge. I prefer the big cruiser types for two people, especially if you are tall or weigh more than 80kgs.

TedDBayer:

The bigger bikes weigh more and do less distance. I like a mid sized bike so a girl can drive it also.

But ... but ...

Yea you're right. Good point. My big cruiser definitely won't go 60 km on one charge, but it looks cool.

Maybe I'll get a smaller one next time.

Bonus! You keep the girl AND the scooter. Of course you know she has secretly decided the scooter actually belongs to her, right? But that does not matter.

I knew she wanted the scooter cause she asked me the first day if she could borrow it for a week because her mother was coming. I wanted to buy two scooter but she wouldn't let me. I rented a scooter and got caught.

"borrow it for a week." LOL it's her scooter. And you cannot buy another because she won't let you. LOL

Oh wait my girl does the same thing with me, but not about scooters. It would be nice to use my iPod now and then. I hear they are a joy to use. I like my Sansa but I bought an iPod so I might as well use it, right? Maybe my gf will let me borrow "hers"?? LOL

Hey Ted, good blog. You might add something like this: "The bigger bikes weigh more and do less distance. I like a mid sized bike so a girl can drive it also." And you missed the 'b' in available in the sentence under the picture.

Normally I would be a &#%@ and point out your typos in a comment on your blog, but today is my day off.

Typos - everyone makes them - except my mom.

I edited my blog a few times but now I also don't see a way to edit? Maybe I'll post a question and ask Mr. Bo Vine.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
