Q: Buying an ebike in Shanghai - aye or nay?

In terms of prices, risks of getting stolen and time saved on the roads - what do people recommend?

I would say nay. It seems to be a fad among foreigners in Shanghai, and even Suzhou, to get a scooter or vespa, but I find that it's more about image than anything. Shanghai's transport system is the best in China so do you really have to be another pollutant on the road? Plus, there are a lot of safety issues to consider. Accidents happen all the time and I even have a friend who sustained serious leg injuries last year in an e-bike crash. Get a bike if you really have to, it's cheaper and better for you! Plus you won't lose that much investment money if it gets stolen. Wink

Remember it is necessary to get a Chinese motorcycle licence for any motorcycle with a petrol, LPG or diesel engine. You do not need a licence for an electric bike but be careful some of those on sale do not meet the regulations regarding weight or speed. Overseas or even International licences are not valid in China. If you are caught you may face detention for up to 15 days and certainly a heavy fine and possibly confiscation of your machine.A bicycle is the best choice and least expensive, get a good lock and make your bike look ugly and old then the chances of theft are less. Shanghai is an excellent city to cycle around with many special lanes set aside.

I paid only 100 dollars in my last scooter! I have been stolen, and I didn't care!
