Idk if this is just in Shanghai, but literally all Chinese people here say "bye bye". Even those who don't speak or know a word of English. Even cab drivers. I find it very interesting and strange. Like is it the posh thing to do? Kinda like people in the West who don't speak French or Italian but say "ciao" just to sound cosmopolitan? Do they know that among native speakers only small children say this ?
I find the tone they use for "bye bye" particularly interesting. It is always in the soft tone, almost like a question.
bye usuali use for china Hongkong, but now allot china people use it,thats mean ciao in italy
A lot of people are using "Hello" as well. I asked some people and they said it is fashion!
Phonetically, incredibly easy to say after learning. Same as "Hello" and the same as "Ciao". Greetings in most countries are the first thing you learn and are usually the easiest to remember - except Hungary!!
Yeah I dig what you're saying. I guess it's just weird because like maybe posh people trying to be cool in the U.S. say things like that but you don't get cab drivers or 90 yr old men in the U.S. saying "ciao" or "au revoir" or what have you.
Add the fact that they chose "bye bye" (a 5 year old's way of speaking) instead of "goodbye" or just "bye" and it just seems a bit strange . But maybe it just me
It because of text messaging... they use 88 or 886 to say bye (saying "ba ba" almost sounds like
'bye bye"). Same for using 3Q for thanks.
Everyone in the Lanzhou-Xian-Xining areas say bye bye, it's quite normal.
It's funny you posted this, I was going to, I was wondering if they say it to everyone or just us.
Here in Guangdong they think bye bye is actually Cantonese!! I've tried in vain to explain to them it's English but they won't have it... It's Cantonese...
