We were just talking about what to do in case our city is ever hit by an extreme typhoon like the one that devastated The Philippines the last couple of days.
Options are.
a) Stay in our apartment. Built in 2009, has 25 floors, we are high up. Looks solid but who knows when the foundation gives up- It's about 10 km from the South China Sea
b) Go to the family's place. Built in early 80ies, only 4 floors, lots of metal roofing and shit around the building. Has survived a lot of typhoons but never anything this violent. It's about 2 km from the South China Sea
c) flee further inland.

If one has seen the after-effects of this typhoon, the decision would certainly be a no-brainer. Go somewhere away from the path of the typhoon.
If you decide to stay in your apartment, your windows will probably be blown out from the strong winds and flying debris... it would be obvious what would happen next. Likewise, you'll probably hear some creaking from the building swaying...quite scary. Your building will probably hold its foundation, but then again... you never know.
Going to your family's place and it being 2 km away from the sea and only 4 floors high? The storm surges went up as high as 5 meters (16.4 ft.) and higher in some areas (according to reports) and whose effects were similar to that of a tsunami. Likewise, the winds ripped out roofs and the like.
We can only do so much to stop mother nature...
Go home, you don't love China enough. Chinas storms are the best in the world. Go home foreigner. China has 5000 years of history of typhoons.

Man I missed a bullet on this one. I'm going to the Philippines on Thursday.

My niece arrived to Manila few days ago. I was guessing, all airports will be closed, but she said, everything is (almost) normal there.

Flight is booked. Only staying 6 days. Its a cheap flight from China. I'm not spending winter in China. I have a direct flight from Manila to home. Gotta go. Not like a Canadian winter is paradise, at least my house is livable. I may pack up the critters and go to the Dominican. The cats can use the beach for a litter box.
