Q: Can anyone actually taste "gutter oil"?

So "gutter oil" (地沟油) is scary, but how are we supposed to avoid it? I mean, the kind of places that would use it aren't regulated anyway so what, we're just supposed to go up and say "excuse me, do you use gross poopy oil ladled out of sewers?" I was wondering if anyway one can actually identify the taste of gutter oil in food, the way some people can taste caffeine or MSG or alcohol in things that I can't.

My girlfriend says there is really no way to know.

Best thing to do is go buy your own food and cook it yourself.  That's what we've been doing.  As an American, I really don't like oily foods, I always cooked my veggies with only water back in the states.

The unfortunate part is that even if you ask them, they may not know they are using gutter oil. I've read that some packaged vegetable oil that looks the same as any other at the store might actually be gutter oil. Of course the packaging will not say anything about it. The truth is, vegetable and canola oils are already rancid to begin with, it is just processed in a way to take away the smell. Lovely, isn't it?

if it tastes sort of fishy (fish flavoured) and they only fry tofu  or meat at that stand, then it is gutter oil. but in a way, i am lucky. the city where i live, people can't cook for shat. so they soak the food in oil instead of doing it te right way. so you taste more of the oil.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
