Q: Can a Chemical Engineer find a job in Hong Kong/ China?
Hi Everyone!
My friend who is an American Chemical Engineer, will visit Hong Kong next week.
Is it possible for him to get a job here/ China? Anyone knows about this industry in Hong Kong/ China would like to give an advice? He loves Hong Kong/ China and wants to live here.
He gets quite good paid over there. Hope he could find the best in Hong Kong.

Yes, it's possible but it won't be easy. The reason for that being similarly qualified HK Residents Card holders will usually be considered first and, where local options do exist to fill a vacancy, the government will make it difficult to obtain a work permit. Your friend will more or less have to convince potential employers and immigration that he/she possesses skill that local HK residents do not.

HK is a part of China.

unless you have a PRC passport in which case you are not allowed freely into HK. Don't understand how the people of the PRC can live being treated like second rate citizens in their own country.
i doubt that in hong kong is much of a chemical industry
Kaiwen:
There are many HK registered industrial chemical supply companies. They are generally multinational with offshore or mainland facilities but, for sure, there are many chemical engineers employed in HK.
I search "chemical engineer" in site job sites, there are very few. How can I search the openings?
Do an internet search and make a list of industrial chemical or gas companies in HK such as BOC and Air Liquide. Also use www.linkedin.com to see what that comes up with. Then write yourself a really strong and persuading cover letter + CV and send out speculative applications. Just remember that there is simply no shortage of science graduates (even Masters/PhD) in China and HK. They will be given preference and have the culture/language skills. Your difficulty will be offering something on paper that they cannot. It won't be an easy task.
If you marry him he could quickly get his HK residency and then he could have a much higher chance of success. =)
