In the U.S there are programs where you can sponsor people to come to the U.S. to get a work or residency visa and try to become nationalized. which is how most of my Scandinavian ancestors came to America .
but i was wondering if there are similar means of entry for china, and how exactly they work.

As far as I know, there is no direct equivalent in the Chinese system. A Chinese citizen can invite someone to come over and visit them for a short time on a tourist visa or a company can invite someone to come and work but these are all short term measures. Even foreigners married to Chinese nationals still have to have their medical every year and reapply for their one year residence permit. Long term visas with a view to becoming nationalised are intentionally not part of the system. I've heard rumours that if you invest a huge amount of money in China you might be entitled to Chinese citizenship but apparently that's incredibly rare.
To my knowledge, there are only dozen of people who became Chinese nationalities. China is not an immigrant country. That is the point!
"like in the us" clearly you are not american. because an american citizen can't sponsor anyone to come into the country unless it is your wife / fiancee or family member
In the USA they have removed sponsoring someone who is anything but immediate family. In china you can be sponsored for a 1 year tourist visa.

As far as I can tell, in china, anyone can sponsor anyone. It might not always work but I've seen many examples of it working.
