Q: Can a dependent with Z visa work?
Hi, I am new to Shanghai but my 2nd trip to China. I am here on a dependent visa(z). Is it legal to find a job as a dependent? Earlier worked in Harbin as an English teacher 4 years ago? Any suggestions/ experiences appreciated!
Legally NO,you can not unless you get a Z visa issued to you. As a lawful dependent of another person holding a Z visa all you can legally do is enter China and reside with that person, nothing else.

Since the paperwork for a legal visa is enormous, many companies will prefer to bribe local authorities to not arrest you (immigration police 'educates' the company when they visit). It's the arrangement I currently work under, but it's hardly as safe as legal work. Bribes only work as long as you are not given any negative attention, like getting into an argument on the streets with an old ayi who wants money from the foreigner who hurt her. If you lose your cool, you'll be hated by the public, and police will be forced to deport you despite bribes collected. Anyway, I don't work in a major city, so I don't know if the bribery system is less prevalent there. Whatever the case, a legal work visa is always better.
Happy is right. My advice is to make the dependent also enter with a Zombie visa. If you both have a z, you can both work.
there should be plenty of work in Shanghai for you to get a "Z" visa no problem
Indeed, and this is the end of the year, and for many well-known reasons, all of the local PSB's become remarkably more vigilent this time of year.
