Q: Can I drive a 1965 right hand drive car in china
This car is a 1965 Mustang which I own and is currently in Australia.
The car is mechanically A1 and is fully registered for road use in Australia

I studied this extensively because i wanted to import a car. From the information i got ( which in all likelihood is different than any info anyone ekse gets) sais that no car older than 20 years can be registered.
There is a rumour, which i read on a chinese government website that sais anyone with an expert certificate can import tax and duty free. though months of asking found no one who would confirm this.
I calles litterally hundreds of import agents and non could do it. And that was a new car.
Its always worth a try but.... in short. No you cant.

The import and duty free was a law. Sadly this law has been changed now. Rich Chinese used to pay foreigners to import cars for them so they could avoid the taxes. This tax avoidance scam was eventually found out and laws were introduced to stop it. That was about 4 years ago now.

Are you willing to pay what the car's worth as import tax? Does it meet all of China's emission standards?
China has a problem with old cars. If you can get it registered (which will be bloody hard even if you can get it imported in the first place) then you'll have 11 years and then officially you should then scrap it!
Do yourself a huge favor. Keep the Stang in Aussie Land.
You wont be able to register it.
The import fees will be prohibitive.
You won't be abe to find a mechanic that can fix it
You'll need to import parts to china.
You'won't have the safety and security of a modern car. That's something you may just want for the chaotic roads here.

Mike's right as far as I know. Can't be letting poor people ship over old civics from the real world for $2000. Gotta keep cars off the road unless the sale/manufacture of those cars contributes directly to GDP growth.
It's funny people at work ask how it is american kids in TV shows always have cars and I explain that having a car just isn't a big deal. You can score a perfectly respectable car that nobody is gonna turn their nose up at for <$5000 used and a functional one for <$2000.
Used cars seem to really hold their value here, i'm not sure why I dont think people here take care of them. I guess they start much more expensive though. I know something normal like a camry costs bank here.
unforunately not allowance is made for collector/classic cars. A mint 1970 Aston Martin is the same as a 1988 Honda CRX as far as the govt is concerned.
