I think the answer is quite simply no. In order to renew a visa, you need to leave mainland China. Now, some will argue Hong Kong is part of mainland China, but for visas at least, it's not considered that way.

Now, I have heard of agencies doing things in Shenzhen, however it's hard to tell which ones are shady and which ones are legit. And since the government changes visa laws every 6 months or so, I'd say your best bet is to go to Hong Kong, or, if you have a bit more time, go to South Korea.

Depends on your visa type. If your wanting to renew F, X, Z from a school, business or work place you are still and will continue to work for, you can do it in China. If you want an extension on a tourist visa, it can be done twice before having to exit to Hong Kong but it's guaranteed they will ask you of your intentions. Agencies are a good way to avoid the hassle but at a price. If you want to change L to Z, the agencies will lie my friend. X to Z F to Z in Shenzhen are possible if you were employeed or being educated for only 6 months can be changed without leaving China but you will have to go to Hong kong for your Medical and to exit at least one time then come back for your resident visa. Now, on that note, the bad news. Shenzhen, Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin require you to go back to your home Country for any Z visa if not being renewed in China. Sorry, but I hope this helps.

Why is it a "dreaded Hong Kong" run? If you're already in Shenzhen what difference does it make? Take a couple days off, get your visa squared away and enjoy HK

Hong Kong is arguably the best city in Asia, I'd put it ahead of Tokyo and Singapore and definitely Seoul

You don't "have to go to Hong Kong" you GET to go to Hong Kong. Go to Booking.com you can find TONS of perfectly decent, clean safe (though very small) hotels for 5-800 HKD a night, and that's not scumbag chungking mansion either. Normal places that a reasonable person wouldn't turn up their noses at.
