Q: Can I get a Chinese Z visa from a company registered in Hong Kong but operating in China?
I had an interview for a job based in Shanghai with company registered in Hong Kong and operating in China (with the office in Shanghai).
They said that they can sponsor me a Chinese working visa. I am actually not sure if they really can... Any ideas?

They can do it through their Shanghai office.
You just need to ask if the company has a license to employ foreigners. If it is a decent size company it's easy to get. If they have the license it's no problem to get you a z.
I assume you are talking about an industrial company of course.
If it's a school, then that is a different matter.

If they have an office in Shanghai they are very likely registered in Shanghai too.
Otherwise you are screwed unless they have good guanxi.
I am also working for a HK company with registered offices in Shenzhen and Foshan.

i think shareholder of the shanghai office is hong kong company.
dud, of course the shanghai office can be your sponsor for the z visa.
If not, you definitely can not get the z visa from registered hong kong office.
