Q: Can I get an English teaching post when I have a British degree but no teaching certificates?

I have a BA in Philosophy .   I've been traveling around China quite a lot, now,  I want to immerse myself into the Culture.   Think that teaching English will pay the bills and give me time to explore.  Problem is, I have no idea how to teach, too busy thinking.   Can I obtain a TEFL certificate in China?  I can't speak Chinese.

Since posting I've done a search and found my answer.   Don't want to waste anybody's time.

Next time when you see the employment ad of English teaching, you may dial the number and explain your situation. Then you'll get the answer after several calls. However, it'll take your time to find such ads and costs to dial out. Try it.

It's still worth answering for people who come along later and type the same question.

.................................................................................................

Can you get a teaching job? Yes.

Will you be any good at said job? Not for the first year, unless you're an amazingly gifted teacher.

Will you enjoy it? Don't count on it. Not unless you get well (CELTA, Trinity are good, Education/ESL masters is best) qualified and go for the premium jobs.

Would the Chinese staff at your school know a good teacher if he bit them on their collective behind? I doubt it.

Do not trust your employers. Look out for number one. Good luck.

If you think it's an easy way to get lots of free time to travel you're wrong. It's still a job and you have to put in the hours required.

Even if you choose a 14 hour uni gig you'll still be amazed how much time you spend outside of class (if you're anything social).

So I'm not likely to get much time off.   Seems a bit pointless then.   I'll just have to keep spending my pounds cool

If you can't teach perhaps it's best to leave it to the professionals.   There seems to be plenty of non-professionals pretending that they're god's gift to English already ripping off Chinese students..   Good luck in your search and make sure you've got a visa.

I've decided that it's not for me.   I see your point, don't want to make things worse.
