Q: Can I get a Z visa invitation from a third party (legally) and then work somewhere else ?

The college I am volunteering at on a student visa  has offered to pay me full wages, but can't do so because it is not authorized to directly employ foreigners. Can I channel my wages through a  third party and get a visa that way?

I am in Chengdu, if you know any companies that can do that  (legally), please let me know

What are my other options?

Once you're talking about legal work in China/Z visa, you can work only at Z sponsor, which must be authorized for foreign hire by SAFEA, in order to get Working permit and Invitation letter, both documents needed at Z visa application.

There are Co's. in China, who hold foreign hire authorization, and have Contracts with schools around China, where they send FTs once they arrived to China with Z.

You might get more info on such possibilities from Visa agents.

Here's one:

Except that SAFEA do not administer work permits. SAFEA administer Foreign Expert Certificates. In China, WP's and FEC's are two different things.

Yeah, that's my conclusion.

I thought everything - WP, Invitation Letter, FEC get done by SAFEA, but they might have special dept. for each thing.

Chinese Gov. in short.

Kaiwen:

I have no idea why (I guess it is just symptomatic of the ridiculous bureaucracy in China) but foreign nationals seeking permission to work in China can go down one of two routes. The Labor Supervision Bureau issues work permits and SAFEA issue Foreign Expert Certificates. The end result is the same. Both routes require an invitation letter and Z visa to complete the process and get a RP. Schools employing foreign teachers almost invariably take the SAFEA route and get a FEC. I have my own business and get a WP from the Labor Bureau.

I guess at the end of the day it's just semantics but work permits and FEC's are completely different in Chinese labor law.

Whatever I know is out of my own experience and hanging on this Board. I've never read any Chinese Law or Regulations.

I didn't know there are two 'windows' for WP in China.

Let's look at your question. Is there a legal way to break the law? No. There are ways around the law, but I'm not going to make myself an accessory.

If any one asks , your just a student there. Although keep in mind if ur gonna work illegally forget about ur rights. So either u suck it up and take a risk or let it pass.

A:No, you won't be able to work at other companies other than only at the one which sponsored your Z visa and other permits for it! You can legally work only at the Z visa sponsor, working anywhere else (even with the consent of your primary employer!) is illegal. -- icnif77
