Q: Can I go to jail for this?

I just cleaned my rice-cooker....

How much trouble am I in?

No, I don't mean the bowl that you put the rice and water in - I mean the whole appliance - inside and out... and the lid!

I know I shouldn't... I should have realised it's a no-no when my ayi's have refused to clean them in the past... and those students and friends who have come to cook for me. As well as my ex-, when she cooked for me.

So, how bad is it?

(ETA: I also used hot water... and detergent.....)

(ETAA: Wow - not bad for my 1000th post Tongue.. and on Star Wars day! Tongue)

oh no say it isn't so, NOT hot water, you are a barbarian foreign devil.

my gf goes off about things dirty, but doesn't really clue in on the bigger picture, like an entire apartment. she always is nagging that my counter is dirty when it is stained plastic. i've bleached it. i know its clean. so i have committed a worse offense using bleach. I choose death by ooga booga.

If your Chinese friends find out, surely they will claim you are slowly poisoning yourself and will die from that soap. Surely it is the most dangerous thing you could do to your food. Serves you right.

Ja Ja, I will share with you two different situations I face.  One is the wok, the other (as you) is the rice cooker.

But let me tell you first that I hear every day that I do not know how to clean (dishes, clothes, floors, furniture, anything)

The rice cooker.  All she puts in is rice and water, so why clean it between uses.  Just remove old rice from inside and use it again.  The rice is served out with a plastic spatula, and that's gets clean with warm water.  Maybe 3 or 4 times a week, while she is out of the apartment, I do give it a very detailed cleaning, especially the lid area.  So far, I have not been caught.

The wok:  Same story here, you do not eat from it, bacteria is killed by heat, so just rinse it with water after usage and that's it.  To the wok I even use steel wool to clean the outside, and a good rubbing with a sponge and soap to the inside.  When I finish with it, looks like new.

And yes, when she tells me I do not know how to clean, my reply is "I am learning from you".  For a woman so paranoid as to require 3 sets of kitchen knives, one for meat, one for vegetables and one for fruits, sometimes she makes no common sense at all !.

Shining_brow:

I strongly suspect your wife isn't a true Chinese person... no real Chinese person would need more than 1 knife for... everything!  (and, only 1 filthy rag to wipe it 'clean' after each use!!)

HappyExPat:

Shining Brow; She has slant eyes, speaks Mandarin, Cantonese and pretty good English after a year almost with me, 173 cms tall, 54 kilos, has Chinese ID, Chinese passportr (only Hong Kong out of China twice with me). Please trust me, she is a traditional Chinese Lady, and not my wife but GF (or companion, so far). In many ways, she is extremely clean for some things, for others she is way behind my standards, But that is the way she is.
