Q: Can I study Chinese for free?

I am a college graduate and working now, but after my contract is finished in August I want to study Chinese, hopefully for free.

I hear that a lot of students in Beijing do not have to pay tuition or rent? Do I still have to be a student to get these scholarships? Are there any scholarships for those of us that have graduated already?

"Scholarship for a graduated student" , I have never heard such a thing !

But there are several kinds of scholarship that you can apply for example CSC(China Scholarship Council), Good luck!

WooMow:

A good link for sure, so many scholarships available.

You would have to apply for a graduate program, and qualify for the Chinese Gov. Scholarship. You could theoretically enroll in a masters program in Chinese, do the mandatory year of Chinese study, then drop it.

I'm pretty sure there aren't scholarships for Chinese language study, that's a cash cow for Universities here. But an intensive semester of Chinese is usually about 11,000 RMB in the first tier. MUCH cheaper than a tutor or night classes. If you really want to learn though, it's best to leave the first tier for a couple of months.

Get a Chinese girlfriend who cannot speak English.  You will be amazed how quickly you will learn, for free.  Well, not exactly free, nothing in life is free.

There is no such thing as free lunch.

You have to pay for you get and you get what you pay for.

Sometimes in cash , sometimes in kind.

If you finally manage to get that damn door to open you could go outside. You may find some people who speak chinese in your neighborhood. Practice with them. Try shops, taxis and bars to start with and work your way up from there. More or less free but practical.
