I am leaving for vacation to America in a few weeks. I have a residence permit which will expire 3 days after I return. It would take at least 6 days (most likely 2 weeks) to get my FEC and health certificate. So my residence permit will be expired by that time. However, i would have started the process before it expired. I would have also entered the country before it expired. I plan to work for a new employer once I get back (a related question: Do I need a Z visa to obtain a residence permit?)
Can I use my current residence permit to enter China and then apply for a new one or an extension/renewal after it expires? Since I am also changing employers, I would be transferring it to the new employer as well. My employer is a legitimate company that is able to obtain a FEC for me.

You should apply for new residence permit before it expires.. or else there will be fine..
But applying a new residence permit will need a new Work permit... Suggest you ask your new employer to start your Work permit application asap... Its not easy.. some good companies take 1 month as some Alien Employment Permit must come from Beijing.. But may be your company could get it faster?..
Btw... what is FEC?

I am a teacher. My work is authorized by a "foreign expert certificate" authorized by the State Administration of Foreign Expert Affairs. I don't need the alien work permit from Beijing; that is for non-teachers.
If you are still working for the same school, you should have it extended before you go

I am changing employers, unfortunately (actually it is fortunate for me :)
Then grab the paperwork before you leave and just visit the embassy while back home. A bit of a hassel I know bu at least you don't need a letter of recommendation or FEC canceled

My company doesn't want to do this. I think it will cost them a lot more money. Maybe the problem is that they've already contacted the SAFEA in the province where I'll be working, and started the application based on getting the release/recommendation letter.

Do you know if it is possible for me to go back to the states and then send them my passport so they can finish the paperwork, then have them send it back before I fly out to China again?
you need a residence permit before applying for a work visa. (fyi)
