Energy drinks serve one purpose - to give you a short, sharp, swift burst of energy.
This is derived from the sugar content in the drink.
Chinese energy drinks have less glucose and fructose in them than Western ones (Time Out Beijing Magazine recently ran a 'Versus' article), and are mostly sugar, giving them a super-sweet taste, but the overall effect is similar.
It will get you buzzing!

Unless you're a true athlete looking for a good balance of glucose, electrolytes and hydration (which I assume you're not, judging by the amount of time you spend sat in front of a computer), then choosing the Chinese energy drinks will be comparable to the Western imports, and much much cheaper.

Ok, I'll not really post anything here for Ludovico answered your question thoroughly. When I go to the gym I generally par take in a Chinese energy drink. It's not like Amp, but it does the trick, it's cheaper and to be completely honest, a little weaker than Western energy drinks. They usually leave me to hyper.

Ludovico got one aspect entirely wrong. It's not just the sugar in energy drinks that gives people a buzz, it's the caffeine content. Sugar only gives you a temporary boost of energy followed by a sudden crash. Red Bull is such a sucess because of its combo of caffeine and sugar.
Therefore to answer the question, go for Western ones. You don't just want sugar to give you a buzz, you want caffeine!

It depends what you want it for.

For staying up late, sure choose red bull.

For physical/sports training, you don't need caffeine, just sugar/glucose.
