I think that I would need far more particulars of your case to offer a serious, balanced opinion. It will depend upon, among other things, the province where you are located, the locality within the province, your nationality, the duration and validity of your passport, etc., etc.
Yes there are agencies that can help you. But the rate I know here is around 1 grand as opposed to only 200 to 300 if you were to do it somewhere else.
It's still possible but nowhere near as easy as it was about five years ago. Now you will have to have very strong reasons for the extension and preferably using someone with a fair bit of "guanxi" with the local PSB. The more realistic option is to use a visa agent but another question must be where you are in China. You need to balance the cost of using an agent with simply crossing the border and getting a new visa. If you are somewhere near HK or Macau, the second option is relatively simple.
Thanks guys. I am 2 hours away from Hong Kong. So best to go and shop around there then...
Dear Miella, if you are from one of the countries that is eligible to obtain an "L" visa in Hong Kong, then why bother extending the current one on the mainland? Do the Hong Kong run, IMHO, arrive early, pay for same day service or next day service (depends upon the country) and then return with the new visa.
In Beijing you can extend L visa 2 times, but you need to provide:
-application form with photo
-registration form (copy)
-Document from bank stating that you have at least 20 000 RMB
You can extend 2 times 30 days each with 1 entry at PSB near Yonghegong.
It takes one week to process the visa and the fee is 168 RMB.

Then based upon what I hear and what I have heard, this is going to be an arduous process for you. In the province where I live, it is nearly, I say nearly but not totally, for South Africans to obtain any kind of visas at all.
May i ask what province you are in?

Liaoning. I think that you are in Guangdong or perhaps Guangxi.
Miella, from what I have been told, and from what I read on the Web, citizens of South Africa get not obtain visas for the PRC in Hong Kong. If anyone has else on this Board has had such an experience or a difference experience, perhaps they might chime in.
Those who say do the HK run for the visa extension. It is no longer available, unless you have a flight ticket.
Actually, a computer print-out of a flight itinerary will do and any visa agent that is handling your application in H K can provide this for you.
