Generally speaking, you can trust this site.
You do have to consider that ads are placed for free, so anyone can post job ads.
Some guidelines when reading job advertisements:
If the same company is constantly advertising, they're either constantly updating their pool of potential employees OR most likely they are not really offering what they're advertising. There's a certain training center in Yuexiu (Guangzhou) that comes to mind. What they advertise and what's offered you during the interview are two totally different creatures.
If it seems to good to be true - it probably is.
If the starting salary has a w-i-d-e range, they'll expect you to start at the lowest tier (i.e.: salary from 4K - 16K/mo...bet your bottom dollar that you'll be offered the 4K).
Know what's the norm for the city AND the hours you'll be working. Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, etc., for less than 8K/mo with accommodation included is pathetic, as is 12K/mo for 40 hrs/wk..
Is the advertiser a direct employer or agent? There are some good agents but a lot will simply say whatever it takes to get their commission.
Does the advertiser use a corporate email (hr@employersname.com) or a free e-mail account (trustme@igonnaspamu.com)? You cannot always tell on this site by replying to an ad, but a real employer should have real contact information when (if) they reply to you.
I should add that you NEVER need to pay for getting a job in China. A legit recruiter gets paid from the hiring organization.
On the flipside:
Spend some time on your covering letter (the text in your email application). Address the qualifications sought after and how you are the ideal candidate for the position.
Make sure that you have a current resume or cv available for uploading.
Have a scan of your passport, degrees, and maybe some other pertinent pictures or documents available for upload. Check your formats and filesizes! Also check that your documents are readable (fonts, compression, etc.)
Check your spelling and grammar! F7 (MS Word) is your friend.
Do not apply to advertisements that stipulate certain qualifications and/or country of origin if you do not meet those requirements! If I am in the position to hire legally, YOU must meet the legal requirements for me to hire you.
Do not send more than one follow-up e-mail if you do not receive a response! Along with some Spam, HR can receive 20 or more applications per day. Qualified applicants can receive a response in a day or two, or it can take a couple of weeks.
If you contact an advertiser and they are not what they are promoting themselves to be, use the "Report Abuse" feature and give a detailed account of what transpired. The good folks at eChinacities WILL take action!
Good luck and happy job-hunting!
Shining_brow:
Need to add - NEVER accept a job that doesn't give you a Z visa. Don't even consider it.
And, like anywhere else, consider the offer carefully... DO NOT RUSH INTO IT!!! If you've got the qualifications (white, native English speaker, degree, maybe TESOL certification - in that order of priority!), you'll get a job here EASILY!
And, always have funds to escape if you need to.
when looking for a job in China there's always the possibility of a scam. You just have to be smart about it and always be suspicious. If an offer sounds too good to be true then it probably is.
I believe I found my current job on Echinacities. Like those above said, you have to be careful. Do research, know what to expect, ask questions, and you should be fine.
