I've asked this question to my Chinese friends before and I think the answer seems to be no you can't. I think if you book in advance it means the seat is taken, but if you don't turn up they would sell it anyway!! No one on the seat, okay I will sit there!!

i got a bus ticket from qingdao to beijing for oct. 1. i got the ticket with me. so you can buy it. but i was also told to show up 2 hours early to make sure i get a seat. because this being China. you having booked a ticket dose not guarantee anything
