No. SIM cards must be registered to the buyer.

Says who? You can buy SIM cards at small shops, even those holes in the walls. You really think they're registering your info? Or even asking for it?

i use gokunming occasionally and there has been a long running topic on there until recently about the problems foreigners are having getting SIM cards there.

Yup. China Telecom told me the cut of date is tomorrow (or at some point in July). If the SIM is not registered to an ID it will be cut off. I think they are taking it serious this time. When I went to register my SIM they had a dedicated desk in the shop. I offered my passport and they refused it. My wife offered her ID and they accepted it.

No problem. Just buy a sim car from one of the local shop that are not afiliated with china mobile or anyother network, the samsung or nokia phone shops, they will have a selection of numbers for you to choose from.

They're easy to find. Go to the really shoddy parts of your city or to the area with the most foreign hotels. If all else fails, pay a Chinese some money to make one for you.
I guess I should have used the term pay-as-you-go or disposable phone. I mean a very cheap phone which doesn't require a monthly plan. If you lose it, no problemo!

Easy to get. Just need to register the SIM card against your passport at the shop. Go to a proper China Telecom or China Unicom shop. Put a few hundred RMB on the card, then you can add credit at many corner shops. Almost all phones are sold unlocked here. None of this tied to network like in the west.

You can buy a basic phone for a couple of hundred here and even get reasonable smart phones for not much more but....make sure your phone matches the network. If you're going to use china mobile buy the phone from there. All 3 companies use different 3G systems if you're wanting any data usage. If you just want to talk and send texts then it won't matter.
