Q: Can you envision China legalizing prostitution?
With the recent wave of crackdowns across China, prositution really is everywhere, and there have been calls by some that it should be legalized. I think it won't happen in China for a very long time. Way too conservative.
What do you think?
I cannot imagine that happening.
It would mean a huge bump in the life quality of the prostitutes. (as far as I can read, life as a ho in China doesn't make you go ho ho ho)

Maybe everywhere else in the world, but in China just cause something is legal doesn't mean it has standards.

I am aware of that, but if it was legal at least some of the prostitutes would be working in a more controlled environment, and in some cases maybe even have an employer who is smart enough to understand that well kept girls bring in more money.

I understand your point, but I insist on mine. This is China: legalizing anything morally controversial means pushing its greyzone to darker areas and in a whole new world of unmonitored abuse.

Why?
Criminalisation of prostitution will NEVER eradicate it from China. It won't even make a dent. All the Law does is make prostitutes' lives a lot more dark, dirty and dangerous. They have no legal recourse if they are beaten, raped or extorted.
Also remember that the people initiating crackdowns and enforcing the law are frequent patrons of this industry. Chinese police and government officials are revolting pigs who see no problem in reviling and punishing the women who cater to their needs.

I guess you're not a father yet. But I can tell you I don't want my kids or other people's kids growing up spreading germs and diseases and it's disgusting.. I hope China will make it illegal and do everything they can to stop it.I wish there was no such thing as racism , prostitution, or drugs. but this isn't a perfect world...

Even the best of parents have no control of their childrens steps and choices in life forever, and don't forget about con artist, did you even think about how those girl's are kidnapped or minpulated into those terrible lives or even those who weren't privileged enough to go to school? No you didn't, you're a glasses half empty man. You must look at all the risk...Nothing works just one way anymore, those evil guys have found ways around it and you know and I know those untouchable business men in Guandong will find another way, it breaks my heart for those victims, again I hope China can stop it but doubtful, because it's an everyday job, does Guandong have or want to use that police force budget all year? Who knows.. but thats the solution...

Interesting Fact - There are 3 prostitutes for every soldier in the PLA. Now keep in mind the PLA is the world's largest military force.

Mind you, if this joint did actually start to one day respect law enforcement, legalising prostitution wouldn't be such a bad idea. Perhaps it'd improve the lot of the working girls and make life more difficult for the parasites.
Governments all over the world have tried to make prostitution illegal. Ask yourselves, how many of them have been successful? It would appear that only North Korea is the only country that is successful and how do they do it? On the pain of death! Let's not lie to ourselves that this problem doesn't exist elsewhere. The sentence for prostitution here is 15 days in the clinger and perhaps a RMB1500 fine. Is that a severe deterrent? Hardly. It goes to show how serious they are in stamping out prostitution here. They know it is a necessary evil because they themselves indulge in it, so how can it be eradicated? The possible solution is to regulate it by carving out an area and keep it legal there. I am not saying I condone it but stamping it out brings another problem - more rapes and sex related crimes will rise. Problems like these cannot be solved by strict decree. It has to be managed. Only then can it be controlled. So, those who do not want to be bothered by it need not go to the allotted space. Those who look for it know where to go. All legal and nice.

Erh. North Korea has not eradicated the worlds oldest profession, they just say they have. That is purely like Iran saying there are no gay people there, a made up fact.
In Sweden. Prostitution as such is not illigal, buying sex is. This means, that the horney businessman who gets caught with his pants down will be sure that everyone around him will find out about his doings. That is the way to do it. It's the same with drugs, if you don't make it illegal buying the shit, then the customer base will exist and people will be tempted to ensure a supply.

You are right Scan. Nevertheless, it is impossible to wipe out prostitution. The fact is, forbidden fruit tastes sweetest.
The gov't would do it if they could collect taxes from them. Pimps might masquerade as outraged moralists to try to stop it.
I am certainly not against prostitution, but I would be against legalizing it here.
Here's why I think that..... If a woman was in a position to register as a prostitute, she would be stuck with that label for life. Almost every official she had contact with in the future would know from her record what she was in the past. She would have no realistic chance of getting off the game.
It should be up to the individual what they do with their body. If someone chooses to sell their body for sex the Government should not have a say in it.... to an extent.
Prostitution becomes a problem, in my view, when street walkers start to proposition dudes. You know the sort of streets I mean. Some places in GZ were really bad for it. If prostitution is technically illegal, the police then have the power to move them on.
Prostitutes in China seem to be different from in the west. They are normally not junkies doing whatever they have to for their next fix. Lots of them seem to have normal day jobs and they do their side job for extra cash.
So, I say keep it illegal, but turn a blind eye until it becomes a local problem.
As soon as they figure out how to collect tax on all that pussy they willl do it for - just like they do in Nevada for the last 15 years.
