Mr_spoon:

If you're into blowing a lot of money to hang around posers, teenagers, drug dealers, prostitutes, gold diggers, and generally unfriendly people in a place with horrible music, then yeah, it is THE place to go!

It gets 8/10 badges on the hipster scale, but only gets 1/10 Hutong Hipster badge on the Hutong Hipster scale.

International hotel bars and restaurants (that are usually empty) are the worst. Overpriced everything catering to guests only. Locals beware.

One thing I notice about bar owners here that makes me laugh is if you talk about how expensive stuff is they go on about how "well, the cost of everything is worked into the price, I have to pay staff, rent...etc."

Yet the prices of liquor back home are actually CHEAPER than expat bars in China. Seriously, some place charge $4 US for a tsingtao in China. I can get a domestic beer for $3 at some bars in Vancouver, not the popular ones downtown, but a neighbourhood pub sells microbrews for like $3.25. And the bars in China aren't paying the wages and rents bars in NA are paying.

Such a scam. Lots of these places pay their wait staff 2,500 kuai a month as they make 15,000 a night.
