Q: Can you take a sick-leave certificate and not go to work if your child gets sick?
I was wondering that if my husband and I work in China and my 5 year old girl gets sick(flu or smth) can I take a sick-leave certificate and stay at home with her. Is there anything like this in China?

No there isn't. I don't even know of anything like this in western countries.
What at you can do is take unpaid leave to look after your sick child. Or use your holidays though Chinese holiday entitlement is very low.

There is such a thing in US where you can take medical leave for yourselves or your dependents, and in Oregon starting january 2016 employers are required to provide certain amount of paid sick leaves.
Yeah, china is probably different, i am curious how is it in china since my husband and I have almost decided on the date of our move there

A responsible employer in China would let you have the time off but you wouldn't get paid as far as I know. Employee benefit laws here are not very good though slowly improving.

The other point to consider is that a vast amount of the population either have grandmother living with them to help with their child or send their children back to their hometowns to live with the grandparents. So the parents don't need to worry about this type of situation.

Svetlana, you appear to have forgotten where you are for a moment.
You are a foreigner, you boss is chinese. If you don't work, you won't be paid (or worse). Even if you are sick and have doctor's certs, it is doubtful you will be paid, contract or not.
