Usually it's just too damn salty! If you're eating tomatoes or potatoes with a strangely strong taste, that's probably it!
If you can chew and swallow meat before you wear your teeth out, they've probably used MSG.

Unless you cooked it yourself, it's a safe bet there's some good 'ol MSG in there, yum! I don't know about the restaurants opened by foreigners, I would guess they don't use it, or at least not as much.

There's no MSG testing kit at the local Family Mart so no you can't test for it short of sending it to a lab. About the only way you'll know is if you're allergic to it and your throat starts tightening up after a meal. If you're worried about it don't eat out because your chances are extremely high it'll be in one or more of the dishes.
