Usually it's just too damn salty! If you're eating tomatoes or potatoes with a strangely strong taste, that's probably it!

If you can chew and swallow meat before you wear your teeth out, they've probably used MSG.

is that why "steaks" are strangely soft (tender is not the right word)

Unless you cooked it yourself, it's a safe bet there's some good 'ol MSG in there, yum!   I don't know about the restaurants opened by foreigners, I would guess they don't use it, or at least not as much.

There's no MSG testing kit at the local Family Mart so no you can't test for it short of sending it to a lab.  About the only way you'll know is if you're allergic to it and your throat starts tightening up after a meal.  If you're worried about it don't eat out because your chances are extremely high it'll be in one or more of the dishes.

A:I'll give my two cents on the age part. It's not as easy but can definitely be done. I was 21, fresh out of university and landed my first teaching job in china as a homeroom kindergarten teacher on a pretty standard 20,000/month salary. I'm 1 year in now and am still happy. Pretty much all international kindergarten jobs on here want 2 years experience, but many will still accept if you have experience in your home country. With that being said, being white and having a nice looking face is much more of a decision factor in china vs the west, if you can- use it to your advantage. Good luck finding something! -- brinsleym
