Q: Can you use Gmail without VPN?

The question speaks for itself. I ask because I haven't been able to access Gmail at all without using a VPN for many months now, but friends living in other parts of China (e.g. Hainan) say that they can, from time to time. And for some reason when I access it through my VPN I have to switch to "basic HTML mode", which is basically Gmail as it looked and functioned a decade ago! I'm in Zhengzhou, don't know if that's relevant to this issue.

I changed to Yahoo (mail), and for search I also fancy Yahoo-gle, when I'm in China.

Currently, I'm in EU, and opening GOOG is like some 'lost memories' moment. I'm waiting for docs. to return to 'no GOOG territory' (Kaifeng).

It is the same everywhere around China with Google. I was in Xinjiang, Jiangsu, Fujian, and Google was blocked there too.

I'd say, Chinese cut down the servers for GOOG.

I had the same problem with Gmail when I was living in Zhengzhou, and I ended up getting a VPN (Astrill), and it worked great after that. I'm not sure which VPN you're using, but if you're being forced to switch to HTML mode, then you should consider a better VPN. Astrill is generally quite consistent in its performance and I highly recommend it if you're a frequent Google user like I am.

RandallFlagg:

Yeah, looks like my only option is to change VPN. I'll look into Astrill. Cheers

If you use an email client e.g. Foxmail, there is no need for any VPN.

I suggest use CONNECTMINE VPN, we found it most cheap VPN and faster than ASTRILL and STRONG VPN. Many of my friends use this now, and really comparable to other companies browsing speed. The support are here in CHINA and wechat away. Just a seconds they will answer you right away.

try add them wechat: connectminevpn or 13013816647
