Sign up with Google Sign up with FacebookQ: Cancelling a contract
I work with a company but am really unhappy here in the school. I signed a contract back in Beijing, but there have been many problems.
1. The accommodation supplied has not been an acceptable standard. It is overrun with cockroaches, and even though they repaired the whole in the kitchen ceiling, there is still a leak in the bedroom.
2. They have not provided work books or student books for many of the classes.
3. Although I work 18 hours a week, I am stuck in the school for the remaining school hours and do not get paid for it.
4. It states in the contract that they will pay food expenses - they have not.
5. They also have said they will pay us 500RMB for the transport to school each month, but the transport costs 770RMB due to the distance from the apartment.
6. The company said I would not work weekends, but here at the school, I do.
7. I found out I would have flat mates once I was in the country and had been taken to my room. I had no prior warning and the company made it seem I would live alone.
I am also very unhappy here because the apartment is far from most places, so it is hard to get to markets to buy food such as rice and meat. It is also quiet a long distance to the nearest city, Wenzhou. It makes venturing and seeing the country very hard work as well. This, plus the conditions of the school/home, have made me want to cancel my contract. I am working on an F-visa so I know the cancelations will most likely work differently from the Z-visa. How shall I go about this?

So, you didn't do your research prior to accepting this 'job' and you are currently working illegally.
Here's the solution - go back home to mommy.
You can walk out of the Contract tomorrow! Contract isn't binding, because you are working (and receiving money) with wrong visa. Both, you and your employer are against Chinese law.
There are no repercussions, if you quit School tomorrow or next week. Your employer isn't required to respect Contract in any point, i.e. 'lower salary than Contract', 'more hours required to work than per Contract', and so on.
However, I would suggest to you at first stop posting Qs anon, so we'll know you will not keep coming back to the Board with the same, already answered Qs.
Find new employer, who's authorized to sponsor Z visa, which is only legal visa to work in China.
You're probably looking to return to your home country for Z visa at Chinese Embassy.
If you're lucky, your new employer might get Invitation letter with HKong Z pick-up.
I contacted SAFEA once, while working with F visa (2011). SAFEA helped me to receive last pay. Same school/agency later offered me Z visa with HKong pick-up.
If you decide to seek Chinese Government help, type 'SAFEA' in the search bar above for address and contact numbers in your city.
Good luck!

I was unsure of how things are done around here, so thought my first Q best be posted on anon. Thanks, this was very helpful advice.

Sometimes same Qs are repeatedly posted as 'anon'. When you ask Q under your handle, posters can tell Q was answered already!
"markets to buy food such as rice and meat"
Yeah, lots of us foreigners are worried about this problem - getting our daily "rice and meat"...

My 2nd Q to the Board was very similar to OP's. How do you all know, OP's troll-ing?

Firstly Icnif, yours has a name on it! (which, granted, doesn't mean you're not a troll...:p)
We tend not to go to 'markets' to buy 'rice and meat'. Besides, almost any school, training centre or school is within walking distance of some sort of market. What we're most worried about is other stuff - good fruit, veggies, etc. The choice of 'rice and meat' is very a-typical!!!
As for the post - we have 'holes' in ceilings - not 'Wholes'. (minor, but telling).
And, I've never heard of a contract that "pays food expenses"!!! Giving a card for canteen food, or supplying lunches for free - yes. Generic "food expenses" - never!
icnif77:
Good points, Shining! I wasn't that detailed at reading OP's post. Just 'intuitive' or 'lucky guess-timation', however 'I'm walking out of the casino with full bag'.
add-it: 'In Internet slang, a troll is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic …I might qualify by Wiki, you're right! 02' 'upsetting pee-pole'..LOLOLO
" agree with other respondents. never heard of "food expense" being paid for. and you and school illegal with wrong visa
