Q: Is Caochangdi over-rated?
I've gone to the art village in Caochangdi a couple of times and have always left disappointed from the art I saw. Quite often, half the galleries are closed and the one's that are open aren't overwhelming. I'm wondering if this is a problem just with Caochangdi or art in general in China...
I wouldn't say over-rated is the right word. They did a good job fusing art culture with the local village. The art galleries aren't over-dominating and you still feel like you're in a local village than an art district. The downside with that is that the galleries are hard to find.
But I think Caochangdi is one of those places you go to when there's a special event on like the PhotoSpring or when a big exhibition opens. You have to do your research before going, otherwise you might be disappointed.
