Sign up with Google Sign up with FacebookQ: Catalonian independence... your thoughts?
So, Catalonia (northern Spain) held an 'illegal' referendum (ie, the national government said it was illegal, while the regional government said it was legal!)
Although only 42% of eligible voters voted, 90% of them voted 'yes' to independence. (42% of eligible voters... that's a hell of a lot more than you get in US elections!!!) Granted, lots of ballots were taken away by police, so we won't know what those results were.
So - what should happen now?
Who should have the right to say they want to be part of a country or not? If the country uses violence to suppress calls for independence, is violence justified? (and, at what point does a 'terrorist' become a 'freedom fighter'? Or, obviously vice versa!)

dunno, never followed the issue very much, pops up in the press now and then since I can remember, but I basically know nothing about it. People should be free to do whatever the hell they want if it doesn’t hurt another.
but as far as Spain goes,,,, if you wanna read a hell of a book,,,,

fkn helluva book.
USA had a whopping 56% overall voter turnout. Give them their freedom. Then wait. Then watch for a Hong Kong vote.
Looks like you and me have the same red thumb decorator lol
Sad to be them
Federal Police (in SqWAT dress code) beat old people trying to vote ..... That act alone will get Catalans independence.
ZH is full of pics and vids from the area. ... Today/latest:
"Total Stoppage": Barcelona Paralyzed By General Strike, Barricades As Protesters Take To The Streets
The Catalan rebellion escalated on Tuesday, resulting in a day of "total stoppage" for the Catalan capital, in which Barcelona metro stations were closed, pickets blocked main roads and civil servants walked out.

This is the failure of socialism really, this area has all the money and the most productive and they are forced to support the non-productive poor areas of the country and see no end to this game. I frankly don't understand why they just don't move and leave the country like the 10,000 millionaires that have left France over the last 5 years. The best solution is for the bankrupt country of Spain to sell the land to them and in 20 years, Spain will blow all the money and the productive will pay off the borrowed money and still be the strongest area of the then split country. The socialist will give all the money away instead on investing it in growth and every thing will be right back where it is right now. I think the vote was a bad way to handle this and begging the shitty EU for assistance, since they make the money and produce every thing, just have a work stoppage for a week or two and scare the government free loaders that the gravy train is gone and they could get anything they want.
'Who should have the right to say they want to be part of a country or not?'
Learn from the Scots, I for one am impressed by the way they handle this matter. No bloodbaths, ie civilised. It is called referendum.
'If the country uses violence to suppress calls for independence, is violence justified?'
Learn from the Chinese, 5000+ years bloodbaths-peace cycle. It is called lust for power and primitive barbarianism.
"(and, at what point does a 'terrorist' become a 'freedom fighter'? Or, obviously vice versa!)"
Labels you can cook up as many as you like. Bloodbaths, pain and sufferings each party inflicts on another are real, regardless of whatever labels each party employs. Some people are better learners......

I've always believed that if an area wants to cede let them but I do understand govts right to put it down by any means.
Scotland is a completely different animal. Scotland is a country joined with another country, like a merger.
