Q: Changing your bank of China account from one province to another?

My Bank of China account was originally opened in Handan, Hebei. I am now living in Kunming, Yunnan and want to change my bank over to this province. The charges for using my Handan bank here aren't massive but they will certainly add up. 15 RMB a time for depositing money and the same for ATM withdrawals.

Anyone changed their bank between provinces? What's the procedure?

I am changing province and will open a new account with a new bank when i arrive. A colleague of mine had a nightmare trying to change branches last year: she had to travel back to the original branch and spent 1 day trying to get this done. What annoyed her the most the staff were laughing at her the whole time so she just closed the account.

You'll get the same charges locally, won't you? I've been using my Heilongjiang and Hunan cards all over China without any issue. I've also gotten said charges whether I was there locally, or from afar. If I'm wrong (and I don't think I am), then just open a new account at the local branch.

Rin:

No, if it's a local account, there should be no charges.

I paid five yuan to close an old account .  I then paid nothing to get a pass book savings account.  If you are really adventurous, u can pay 25 yuan for a bank card and get access to your money that way.  You no longer need to pay a surcharge for depositing or withdrawing money.

Empty the old account, create a new account. Maybe he was just being lazy but when I left Beijing I tried to close my account, the guy said just empty it and it will close itself if left inactive for a certain time.
The charge at my banks ICBC and BOC are something like 1% of withdrawals or deposits up to a maximum of 25rmb per transaction for atms from other banks or outside of the original branches city.

Right, it is city based, not province based. If you have the account set up in the current city, there should not be any fees involved in using ATM machines belonging to that bank in that city.
