Q: Cheap place to buy an OK guitar

Hi, I'm planning to move to Zhangjiagang next month but am not that keen on bringing a guitar over, are there any places to get decent guitars in the area? I don't mind travelling to Shangai etc and I don't mind having a copy as long as it plays well

Hey there mcc! I have purchased 2 guitars here and 1 in Manila. You won't have to go to Shanghai I assure you. Find a music shop and there will be a few where you are. The guitars are usually not tuned, so check them out, find one you like, tune it, see what it sounds like. Some are quite good, some are cheap and nasty. My 1st guitar was priced at 750RMB. I negotiated 350RMB. I then bought a cheap and nasty one which I leave at school to play certain games with the kids as well as teach them English songs. My Canadian friend purchased one from Taobao, it was also ok. He also bought one when we went to buy mine and his was priced at 1200RMB and which he negotiated down to 900RMB. His wife is Chinese and she is a keen bargainer - that helped. In Manila guys wander around with 5 or 6 guitars over their shoulder. I picked one that sounded pretty good and the guy wanted 2000php but I got it for 1000php. It's actually better than the ones I bought in China.

So, don't worry, you will find a guitar. And negotiate!
