Q: Chendgu becomes First Tier City - what changes will take place?

Chendgu was recently reclassified as a first tier city on account of its population and local GDP. What are the short-term and long-term consequences of this likely to be?

1. The angry nongs must exchange their pitchforks for Swiss pocket knives.
2. Prices in vegetable markets will go up, because of the increased presence of the chengguang protection racket. I mean, government regulation "for your food safety".
3. Bad news will be more proactively suppressed.
4. Lots of new construction, migrant workers (waidiren), traffic jams from prestige projects and official visits.
5. House prices go up, and people with a Chengdu Hukou act snobbish. Even more snobbish I mean, because of alleged sophistication. Like they just earned/bought a university degree, or something.
6. Special prices for foreigners become even more special. Any Chinese girls helping foreigners get lower prices will be mocked, scolded and threatened. Even if you lived there for years, screw your foreign face, you're no local, you get tourist prices!
7. Some shops might sell cold drinks outside of the summer heatwave. The drink availability alone is a godsend, which is good, 'coz it's pretty much the only perk.
All in all: Totally worth it!

Congratulations Chengdu!!!

I thought first tier designation means special economic zone.

Hotwater:

Special Economic Zone is completely different to Tier level. Guangzhou was never an SEZ yet it’s tier 1.

Zhuhai waa an SEZ yet I think it’s Tier 3 due to time rain small size.

SEZ’s were created with different regulations to open up to outside & make money.

More Starbucks and Uniqlo. Less stores that made Chengdu stand out from any other big city in the world.

Welcome to anywhere, the same as everywhere.

Chengdu has had the qualities of a first tier city within the 2nd ring road for half a dozen years now. So the effects won't be apparent.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
