Q: The Chicken or the Egg?

Here is an interesting perspective to the question. At least I think so.

Twins are born. The first one that is delivered is given an earlier time than the second one on their birth certificate. Yet, at the time of conception, both are developed at the same time (theoretically).

If you believe that life begins at the time of conception, why would you permit the doctor to put two different times on the birth certificates.

Is being "BORN" at conception or at delivery? Yes, it is a pro-Life, Pro-Choice debatable topic.

I think you are mistaking "birth" for "beginning of life". Whatever our views on the debate, we are all bound by the English definition, "existing as a result of birth." Born means to come out of the mother's womb. Conception does not mean birth so your point is moot. Next time, a simple google search of the online dictionary will prevent you from wasting your time.

Well in this case the father came first...  surprise

As far as recording the time of birth goes, it's a lot easier to put a time and place to the delivery because there are people there with a watch actually taking note of the time.

The delivery is when you step into this world for the first time as the finished product, or at least developed enough to function in this world. I think it makes sense to start the records then.

Not necessarily.  A little attention to detail can produce a satisfactory outcome.

If you wanted to debate pro-life or pro-choice then I'd suggest a separate question!

Though on this topic the time of conception could be different. Not all twins are from the same egg. Some are cases of 2 eggs getting fertilised so one could be older than the other if their sperm was quicker off the mark!

But they'd never know which was first so time of birth is better!

Time of birth.

Pro life or pro choice. I can see both sides. But I lean towards pro life. Not for religious reasons, but because every new life is special. Pro choice propigates more regrets than pro life. But thats a decision for the individual to make. And the individual should have the right to make that choice.

Baby hatches.... now there is a related subject that is China connected.

The Reptile Egg!

... wait, was that the question?

I'm strongly pro-choice, after having seen the unwanted beggar children littering the streets in the Philippines. What's the point of forcing a life onto the world when the caregiver won't or can't care? Honestly, pinoys have the cruelest interpretation of Catholicism; even the pope tells them off, but not for being too humanitarian. Go there if you want to see a crucifixion.

When my baby was born, after seeing photos of aborted foetuses on my wife's phone, I didn't want that to happen to Andy. We went to the clinic 3 times, but couldn't follow through. And he's here now, brightneing our day with a great smile!

The egg came first, laid by a bird that was not a chicken. The initial chicken egg was a slight mutation from the predecessors to the chickens. This is what is also known as evolution.

coineineagh:

But if the egg that contained the first chicken was not laid by a chicken, it can't be considered a chicken egg.

So when a black Labrador has a golden lab puppy it cannot be considered golden ?

Get in the game. Evolution happens over millions of iterations, each change might be tiny, it might be a dead end (literally) or it might be a new stronger variant of the same. At some point the change is sufficient to start talking about speciation.

this is more a question of semantics. the puppy analogy doesn't compare. the closest thing would be: "it was a black labrador pregnancy."

If you follow the Genesis account of creation, God created all animals first. So the chicken was born first, and then the chicken laid the first egg.

Shining_brow:

I don't get why that god made a creature with genitals, but only later did he/it figure out the idea of having a different creature (of the same species) with different genitalia to mate with, and only then creating that one!

Obviously it was the glorious Chinese egg was first, and all other western chickens and eggs came after it after, seeing how great this grown chicken was. We have a map to prove it. (no, you can't see it).

I would be curious to see how this is a philosophical debate would be handled by the better (but long gone) Chinese philosophers.

As for my stance - I'm not so much "Pro-Choice", but rather "Total control". There's over 7 billion humans on the Earth today, and that number isn't going down. We've destroyed large parts of it, and wiped out huge numbers of species (granted, so have comets, asteroids, and volcanoes...). And as Coin mentioned above, so many children get born into a seriously shitty life (in fact, I'd suggest the majority of babies are..!). Human life, to me, is not so precious that it needs to be born when conception holds (remembering also, that about 80% of the time, conception doesn't hold!) So, somewhere, someone needs to take control of humanity's reproduction, and only grant that 'privilege' or 'right' to those who show they deserve it. - physically, mentally and emotionally capable of raising a strong, courageous, intelligent, stable person.
