Q: Is China becoming like America, or is America becoming like China?

America is turning into an oligarchy, and if the repugs win next year, this will get much much worse.

China is desperatly trying to delevop a free market system like the one that made America rich (until the Bush era).

Which will happen first?

Actually, in my opinion, the era that stopped America to be a leading, rich and responsible country is when Regan became president.

As for your question, Chinese government will keep saying, repeating and hammering that China is a "socialist market economy", while in nature it's a pure capitalist and materialist economy very much similar to the US. The difference is that in US you still have people to vote what kind of president or officials run for an office, while in China, you just play the game of a multipartism assembly (but actually only the CCP has the power) and with the same political party for decades to come.

China wants to copy the same educational system with big universities, or very expensive fees, and keeps making the same mistakes as the US in terms of education, leaving young generations either with huge debts to repay their tuition fees, families always coping with financial pressures to pay these tuition fees or worse the lack of possibility for students to pursue an academic career because of lack of money. That means that in the future, Chinese society will find more and more students left behind and it will be more and more difficult for China to find qualified workers.

Also, while the US are still turned worldwide to solve problems or create ones, China is only focused on its territory and doesn't care about any other countries, except if a country is an obstacle to China's prosperity or China's territorial integrity.

Another point is that China, contrary to the US who are subject to budget regulations, can take money wherever she wants in order to stabilize any deficit (raising taxes, creating new taxes, etc) and nobody, no organization, has any word to say. The central government decides, you just accept it whether you like or not. So all the existing bad debts can vanish quite easily.

Even though, US are not very much liked worldwide (mainly because of wars, etc), it has no direct confrontation with his neighboring countries that can lead to a war, China does. China is very much in tense relationships with Vietnam, Indonesia, Taiwan, Japan and Russia regarding what China refers to as "disputed territories" and this could lead to a local Asian conflict. Moreover, China always refers to North Korea as an ally, but she is unable to control or manage this ally. North Korea won't listen to China and may direct unilateral missile launch on South Korea or Japan just because they want to do it, which in turn may also lead to a local conflict in the regions.

For me, China is copying too much the US in terms of standard of living, economy, education, but she lacks the ability to look at their positive and negative aspectcs.

The US will certainly not become like China as American people still value the notion of freedom and indepence that have made the US to be like that.

Despite the changes that America may go through, Americans will eventually stand against something they don't like. They are allowed to give their opinion. However, in China, you can't fight against the government. So no, America will never become like China. If by improving living standards, China is becoming more like America, then yes, I suppose they are. But China will never be just like America either, totally different backgrounds and mindsets. And logic, don't forget the logic.

crimochina:

sorry i must disagree americans are ignorant and lazy. we are concerned more about ipad, iphones and weed than our country's stability. when we allowed our president to invade another country unprovoked is when my last once of hope for america (people and govt) went out of the window. we all knew bush was lieing but we let it go because "maybe gas prices would come down if we kill some arabs"

I think America is on a slippery slope backwards.

Outsourced manufacting jobs that once went to China, are starting to trickle back.  But now there is no union, non livable wages, no benefits and horrid working conditions.  And empoyers can get away with it as so many people are desperate for any job and will put up with hell to keep one.

Housing market in tatters...more than half of homeowners now under water on their mortgages , beholden to the all powerful banks that don't even pay taxes....even though they caused the mess.

America has become the land of "Of the rich, by the rich and for the rich"

Starting with Reagan and continued unabashed by Bush, shifting the tax burden to the little people, who pay more tax, and get less and less from the government in return.  (unless you count them sending their children to other countries for wars).

Health care has become like China.  Only the rich can really afford it now.

Education...same thing.  With decades of funding neglect, the public school system is abysmal now.  But if you are rich, you can send your kids to private school (same as China).

Yes America is free, and people can vote, but most are manipulated by the corporate influence in all elections...especially now with the latest Supreme Court ruling giving corporations free reign to buy and sell politicians as they wish.

As for China...it's emulating so much of what America has become, not what it once was.

Of course this does not apply to foreign policy.

Shining_brow:

"Of course this does not apply to foreign policy" Yet.... give it time! (besides, what's really the significant difference between Vietnam, Iraq, and other places the US intervened, and T1bet? Yeah, there are going to be some differences in views put forward, but if that plateau didn't have a wealth of ores and minerals, would China have bothered so much with it? Just a thought...I, for one, see similarities)

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
