Q: China deemed "unsafe" by foreign credit/debit card companies?

A Belgian friend of mine was complaining that his Belgian bank card (which he used to take cash out in China) was no longer working. He called up the bank, and was told by the attendant that the company had deemed China "unsafe" and was no longer allowing money to be withdrawn here. However, apparently HSBC ATMs can still be used by some cards.

Anyone who knows more about international finance know what's going on here?

My bank back home recommends cutting credit cards in half upon returning from China and having new ones. Not a good solution for us who are here long term.

A:I'll give my two cents on the age part. It's not as easy but can definitely be done. I was 21, fresh out of university and landed my first teaching job in china as a homeroom kindergarten teacher on a pretty standard 20,000/month salary. I'm 1 year in now and am still happy. Pretty much all international kindergarten jobs on here want 2 years experience, but many will still accept if you have experience in your home country. With that being said, being white and having a nice looking face is much more of a decision factor in china vs the west, if you can- use it to your advantage. Good luck finding something! -- brinsleym
