Long question indeed, but it's been one which has had me racking my brains for a while. You hear all kinds of harrowing tales about the unforgivable treatment of animals in this county, yet I often see dogs/other pets genuinely loved and well looked after by their owners. Of course, this isn't the case for everyone, as only the other day I found myself stopping some guy beating his dog with a lead outside my apartment complex, though what do you think? Is it a similar situation regarding their smothering, spoiling treatment of children in this country?
Pet ownership is new in China. Some love their pets, others don't. Some of those who love their pets do the mistake of treating them like they treat children, therefore you see dogs being beaten with leashes.
As with many other things, it is an area where education is lacking. Most "advice" we get from well meaning strangers about how wrong we treat our dog, goes directly against how you treat dogs in the west.
I haven't thought about the link between smothering, spoiling treatment of children and pets. I wonder why some people would bother that much to put shoes on their dogs claws! They must have too much time in their hands!
Scandinavian:
Shoes on dogs is either misunderstood love, "the poor thing should walk comfortably", or lack of tolerance to actually having a dog "the filthy animal drags dirt onto our home", and then of course in rare cases where it is actually benefiting the dog, if the ground conditions would mean it would hurt it's paws
The pets are "over-loved" while they are young and cute. Have you ever seen a Chinese person show interest in a middle-aged, average-looking dog?
Chinese people don't love animals in the same sense that people with souls do. No emotional bond or sense of responsibility. No interest in reciprocating a dog's love and trust. When the creature stops looking fluffy and cute, it will be a) abandoned on the street, b) killed and thrown out with the garbage, or c) spend the rest of its life being physically abused. I have a lot to say about Chinese men, but the way they treat dogs says it all.
My girlfriend gets very sensitive about animal cruelty, and recently took in a very hungry and dirty stray puppy (one more reason I love her). But she says that she can never talk to other Chinese people about her feelings, because caring about animals is considered retarded. When she reacted emotionally to turtles being boiled alive in a restaurant, her family and friends laughed at her and called her a simpleton. I really wish I had been there for that one.
