Q: In China, how often do you get sick and with what?

I haven't had the flu or a cold for 4 years until I came to China. When I landed I got a cold that lasted for months, just got over it and now I have one again. I got up last night hungry and feeling awful, so I decided to try street barbecue which I always wanted to try, (GF says no), I tried several vendors as was really hungry. I did not get sick from street food, but it cured my cold, na I'm lying about the cold. I haven't had any stomach problems at all. Just deadly colds.

What do you get sick from?

Any tips on beats a cold here or not getting one? I'm ready to wear a face mask if it means I won't get another one. If I could buy tampons I'd shove them in my nose. Frig how can it run this much?.

I have a stuffed nose and sneeze all year round, something I heard locals refer to as 鼻炎. It gets worst in the summer, so I guess it's allergy related but I never had any problems ever back in the west.

I get a case of the runs about every month or two.  Colds/Flus/Allergies/Whatevers are definitely more frequent here....3 or 4 times a year versus maybe 1 time a year before I came to China.

I definitely get sick more often. I got a cold once or twice in the fall. Then either a constant cold for several weeks, or several colds in a row beginning in January. Since then I still have an occasional cough and often have phlegm in my throat. I don't know what's up with that, but it's annoying. I hope it goes away when I go home.

I have been lucky I guess as in the total of around twelve months I have spent in China I have had 1 cold and a slight case of some sort of tummy bug that laid me up for a day. I do get a flu shot each year in Australia and that seems to help in both countries.

Yep, I get a cold every month or two. I can usually shake it off in a day or two, but it is annoying.

A few things help;

1. Wash your hands, with soap, often.

2. Try not to touch anything on public transport, if it's possible (this is hard)

3. Try to eat at more hygienic places, if possible.

4. Keep yourself in otherwise good condition; I take vitamin supplements due to the Chinese tendency to cook the crap out of food until there's no damn vitamins left, and they help immensely.

do you purchase your vitamins here or bring them from home?

MissA:

I've only had to buy them once, and they were purchased locally. Against all the odds, they actually work! That said, I intend to bring a MASSIVE supply back, next visit home.

Best tip to get over the sickness:

Take two Tylenol and two shots of whiskey.  Drink the whiskey, throw the Tylenol away, and go to bed.

After we moved here, my husband got a cough/chest infection that lasted for 4 months. After we moved to a new place and it miraculously cleared up we realized it was caused by the mold in the old place. If you live somewhere that is particularly damp (and if you have in a first-floor apartment and don't use your heater/air condition much to cut down on the humidity), that might be contributing to your problem.

TedDBayer:

I never really thought about mold, I get it in the bathroom, which I'm always scrubbing and I use bleach.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
