In my opinion only, it was a publicity stunt.  And before jumping for my throat, allow me to explain.

Yes, on the news recently there were under 500 laowais getting the so called Chinese Green card.  But it did not say out of how many petitioners.

A friend, from England, married, with a Chinese daughter, living in China for over 7 years now (all married to same Lady), and his petition has been denied for two years now.  Maybe he has not made a "significant" contribution, other than injection money to local economy, creating a Chinese family, and living here happily.  Why to some is "YES" and to others is "Mei You" ?  You have no problems with the Law, you buy a place to live, you behave in general, and still "Mei You", renew residence permit each time.

Overseas many critizice China for disregards to human rights, with reason or not, that is not what it is discussed here.  And locally, many complain about the lack of granting "Chinese Green Cards".  So, Central Governemnt in its wisdom, saw it fit to grant a few and calm the waters.  That is my appreciation.

But I wish like hell I am totally wrong, and they do continue granting them out to those that really deserve it, especially those who do not have 5 million bucks to invest here, who do get it over night.

God, I will be so happy to be proven wrong !  wink

For the last time, would you Americans realize all countries aren't the same as yours? Jesus I remember some yank trying to tell me I "meant social security" when I refered to government pension. CHINA DOESN'T HAVE A F***ING GREEN CARD... jesus.

Does any one knows the origen of such name "Green Card" for the US residence card ?   according to an old story I was told, the name started among Mexicans (our neighbors to the South), who could not pronounce the "Resident Card" properly.  Since the wole card had a background color which was green, they started referring to it as the "green card" and the name stuck, and it is used even today and the card is no longer green, but yellowish now.

Another word we got from Mexicans was "Gringo".  That came around the Santa Ana wars.  US soldiers dressed in green uniforms marched thru then Mexican towns in Texas present area, and were watched by Mexican habitants.  To express their feelings about being "conquered", they started a chant that went like "green go".  Green meant the green uniformed soldiers, go meant go back home and leave us alone (to them).  Soon that chant evolved into today's word 'gringo".

Well, I have been in China for 7 years now and have been married for over 5.
I've been married to the same Chinese woman and we have a 4 year old son. As of this June it will be 5 years of marriage. As to the so called 'green card', I guess that will be answered so enough but not today. As of now, my guess is that it is a shot at the dice and if you know the right people or you are just plain lucky, you get it. For that matter, isn,t it the same when we try to get an American visa? No that easy to come by these days I hear. Being Canadian may make matters a little easier, perhaps. My assuption is that it all depends on your countries relationship with the Chinese government but that,s just a guess. All this is to be taken with a grain of salt my friends. Cheers

Most  are being given to Asian citizens and not to citizens of the West. They are not green cards as my British Cousin has said they are house hold registrations and resident cards similar to what the Chinese carry, although why nevermind thinks bad of Americans in that way, I wish I could say I don't understand but all the Americans except a select few I've run accross have really been a problem in China with arrogance.

Cota and Cota, a lawfirm I work for does help people with these issues and all I see for these issues are from Asian countries, most of them are denied for they have not been married long enough or do not have financial stability to reach the requirements of the paperwork.

There is a green card however, but it's only for the rich and typically are only given to Russians, Hongnese or again that of Asian counries.

And most importantly, nevermind calm down and eat your fish and chips

Cause it's annoying. I had some yank on here post a snotty "I think you mean social security" message when I posted about pension plans once. Sorry, but NOT EVERYONE CALLS IT WHAT IT IS CALLED IN THE USA.

It's f-ing irritating.

Now that you mention it, what kind of Social Security plan does China have? Would you know? And how does it compare to British Social Security?cheeky

To become a Chinese national do you not have to renounce your nationality?

GuilinRaf:

Yes, China doe s not allow dual citizenship. If a kid is born in China but one or both of his or her parents are foreign, the Child will be considered foreign. If he/she has a Chinese parent, he or she has to explicitly choose one of the citizenships.

That sucks, I'd prefer to live off visas rather than give up who I am and where I came from.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
