On a scale of 1 to 10. I rate asia 9.5, and western countries 5. Talking just about daily and nightly things that are amusing, fun, and interesting.
That all depends on your definition of "fun" now really doesn't it. I would say that China is "fun" in my eyes as it's constantly in a phase of flux, with so many things going on at the same time, albeit half of them pretty crazy. I know many people who couldn't think of anything worse regarding their idea of "fun", and would much rather prefer the peace and tranquility of a tropical island for example. But for amusing, funny, interesting (and aggravating) things on a daily basis as you mentioned, China certainly doesn't dissapoint.
Have you ever been to Los Angeles or San Francisco or New York? Yeah I'm pretty sure I would rate the western country higher. Although I did enjoy Japan a lot more! I don't really see China having a really outstanding nightlife. I've been to one of those places at night where they have rock bands but it was crowded and too much smoke in the air.
I like other things about China but I would rate Japan a lot more fun! And compared to a place like Los Angeles, San Francisco or New York it's hard not to agree that those places are really fun!
ChickMag:
Japan looks awesome, I have not been there, but have been to Korea which was fantastic. I have been to NY, SF, and LA's airports, but not the cities themselves. The airports were cool :)
i'm thumbing this question down because it is silly. you can't lump all asain countries togetjer when talking about fun.
and then to equate asia to western countries?
i'm not knocking you, i'm knocking the question. and i'm an expert on dumb questions.
for my free and open life style, i would put germany, thailand, the phils, santo domingo (DR.) and brazil high on my list
ChickMag:
\but certainly western countries have a similar way or feel about daily life, and asia too in some ways. but yes, Thailand is much different than China, and same with Korea, etc. but just in general.
crimochina:
no, you are 100% wrong. edit: example usa is very conservative germany is very open.
nevermind:
I would say that Thailand and China have FAR more in common than for example Canada and Italy.
It is idiotic to lump "western countries" together.
Hulk:
Gave you a downvote on accident. I tried to upvote and fumbled the button... sorry. :/ I wish they were further apart... anyway, here's an upvote.... in text.
+1
No, Crimo is right, you cannot lump China in with SE Asia, they're not at all the same.
Nonetheless, I'll play. Places I've lived for more than six months...
I'd rank China about a 2/10. Winter was f*cking boring, summer was better, but still...
The UK (specifically Edinburgh) was awesome - about a 6.5. It would be more awesome if Scotland were not in a deep economic slump when I was there.
Thailand - beach, bars, an excellent travel scene, cheap beer, cheaper spirits, a somewhat laissez faire approach to closing time enforcement, friendly people, a vibrant culture in which fun is a moral imperative.... um, yeah, it was tolerable, I guess. 8.5/10.
Hanoi is beyond awesome as a young single person. Vietnam moves at a sizzling pace and the streetpub/cafe/bar scene/expat scene is great fun. 8/10
Hulk:
I was very interested in everything Vietnam before China. I gave up since I couldn't find any good Vietnamese lessons anywhere, and the books were lackluster.
Well, I'm really wanting to go there now. Maybe some day...
MissA:
It's a great country. Kind of exhausting and very love/hate, though.
Hulk:
So like China? China is 10% love, 90% hate. Would be 100% love if it weren't for the people here ruining everything.
MissA:
I'd say I loved Vietnam about 90 per cent - hated it about ten per cent.
That's much better odds than you and China!
I've spent all my adult life living and working in various nations all over the world and to add to the problems of comparing them already listed by other posters, you have the fact that usually what a person wants in the form of nightlfe / entertainment changes as one's personal circumstances change.
As a young man Holland was awesome, Belize back then was beyond perfection (for me), Cyprus as a slightly older single man was really good, suited me just fine and was big enough for me to escape the crowds, Germany as a middle aged single man was near perfect but the Arab peninsular nations were, shall we say, challenging. Now as a 50 year old married man China is providing me with what I need, both personally and for my family, it is relatively safe so my wife and daughter can walk the streets without fear and the 'wilder' side of evening activities are no longer what I seek.
No, I'm not going to compare, it serves no purpose.
I haven't seen that much of asian, but I'd put Thailand over China for night life. People are out late in China, but fun?
I don't think I would really put China over the West for fun, sure there are more women in China. It costs more to live in the West, but food is better and safer, way more selections, Health care while not on the fun list is better. You can't have night life or life at all without booze. Compare my liquor store with China? My house is warm in winter and heats easily. I have things I could never have in China, quality pets with good Vet care, Life without wheels and crazy Chinese drivers? I have lots of wheels, a daily driver, a hot rod (in China no way) another hot rod in the works (and non Chinese parts), a Honda bike and 3 project bikes. In China I won't have more than a scooter and I'd have to sleep with it to keep it.
In Asia, I've had extended parties in Hong Kong, Bangkok, Phuket and Bali. There is nothing in China that can even come close to these places, and I have lived in over 20 Chinese cities.
Other extended parties were in Waikiki, Airlie Beach, Fiji, all over Australia and many other places. All of them made China look as boring as it really is, even Seattle.
I will say, however, that the women are much more plentiful in China, probably due to lack of competition from the local males.
As far as the so called "historical attractions" go, I was a travel writer (including for eChinacities), and wrote about the "attractions." Almost all of them are recent reconstructions of historical buildings that were totally destroyed by the communists during the Cultural Revolution. They were also dirty, overpriced and unappealing.
MissA:
Fiji's great fun. My bank account took an epic battering, though.
'Fun' and 'Interesting' are two very, very subjective terms so there's no way of giving an objective answer. I would argue however, that a person's perception of 'fun' and 'interesting' tends to decline over the years...something similar to the "honeymoon phase" being over. I would also argue that this very process is a continuous cycle so while at some stage you may dislike it, perhaps eventually your heart will grow fond of the place again.
Scandinavian:
agreed. KTVs are 'fun' and 'interesting' to some, not to me.
Cancun Mexico was the most fun I'd ever had, never been in any major cities in the US so wont rate it, I've been in many cities here in China and I live in Shanghai and find it boring so I rate China a 2/10. I love the outdoor like camping, fishing, quading, 4x4ing, swimming ect... so I rate Canada 10/10.
some decent places
I too love small town Canada ..... not the cities.
#1 best city, most fun is New Orleans Louisiana USA....
#2 Koh Samui, Thailand
#3 my retirement home here in southern China
#4 Negril Jamaica
#5 Ocho Rios Jamaica
#6 Guangzhou, China
some not so decent places.
#1 USA - eastern seaboard, sucks .. so does California
#2 France
#3 Mexico, except for Mazatlan, where I caught a very big fish
#4 Kingston Jamaica
#5 Bangkok, Thailand
#6 Syria ---- haven't been there, but have I think it is best avoided.
#7 what the hell ...suggest avoiding the Middle East
artdio:
I have a home in a small city in Northeastern Ontario called Sudbury, this city is surrounded with lakes, camping areas, good fishing, old logging roads to drive a ATV or 4x4. I also don't like the big cities in Canada.
MissA:
I REALLY want to go to New Orleans. It's right near the top of my city wish-list.
Where is this "western countries" you speak of?
You know there are many with different laws, cultures and climates...right?
ChickMag:
Just a general question man. No need to think about 'different laws, cultures and climates'
nevermind:
Chickmag, I don't think you realize just how different western countries are from each other.
Well, that all depends, as others have said, on your definition of "fun." "Interesting" can be either very good or very bad.
So...on a great day, China is akin to having a foot long banana-split with all your favorite flavors served on the belly of your current fantasy female/male celebrity. I'll leave it to your imagination where the cherry is placed.
However, on an extremely bad day, China is like sliding naked down a ten-foot razor blade into a pool filled with rubbing alcohol, and infested with sharks!
In comparison? Who knows. It depends on whether it's a great day or a bad one...
No, China is only cheaper. There are many western and asian (Thailand!) countries that are more fun and more interesting than China.
For about 3 months - which is long enough to see al the historic sites and then I can no longer tolerate the pollution.
