Q: China is a nation of... what?
Napolean, in the 18th Century, famously remarked "England is a nation of shopkeepers." (He got it from Adam Smith, author of "The Wealth of Nations".)
The United States is often referred to as "a nation of immigrants". Melting pot and all.
Spain (and the "Spanish" themselves will attest to this) is considered NOT to be a country, but a "nation of nations", i.e. national groups (Catalan, Basque, Galician, Castillian, to name the most prominent) with distinct and different national characteristics, cultures, languages, yet intertwined histories, through trade, politics (read: intermarriages) or war.
So. China. What is China a nation of?
I've got a few notions and I'll share them. None is disparaging.
China is a nation of farmers. Or, China is a nation of shoppers. Or, China is a nation of entrepreneurs. Or what?
China is a nation of villagers
Red_Fox:
Yes. Reminds me of Hillary Clinton's famous line about villages, but I forgot it now...
Red_Fox:
Oh, btw. I won't vote for her again. I hear she is planning another run sometime in the near future.
Scandinavian:
wasn't it "The problem with the global village is all the global village idiots" ??
Conundrums and oxymoron's or just morons if you want to keep it simple
not sure actually. just the few reported incidents,,, could be internet BS.... but I have met old people here who told me that back in the good old days (60 -70's) they would eat grass and tree-bark. so....... cannibalism isn't much of a jump is it? along with the supposedly 'human fetus soup'.

Vyborg:
'Red Dust', a novel by Ma Jian, a Chinese guy telling us how he traveled through China in the early 80's and found himself lucky when he met a doctor from a women's hospital, who invited him to come and eat an afterbirth.
"Of small farmers" I was amazed when traveling by train from Nanning to Beijing to see mile after mile of farmland tilled by spade as far as you could see.
Hulk:
Go beyond the rail station pathways, and most of China is underpopulated.
