China Makes It Official, Launches The Bank That Humiliated Washington

06/29/2015 20:00 -0400

In March, China was “handed a propaganda coup” (to use WSJ’s words), when the UK decided, in the face of loud protestations from Washington, to support Beijing’s efforts to launch a new development bank aimed at filling the gaps left by traditional post-war multilateral institutions such as the IMF and the ADB.

The US claims it has concerns about governance and adherence to international norms around corruption and environmental protocol, but as even the most casual observers are well aware, the real concern in Washington (and in Tokyo) is that China will use the bank as an instrument of foreign policy and as a means of embedding the yuan in global investment and trade.

Old Zombie question. Might as well answer it whilst I am here. They might win a war on Chinese soil. The further from China they go the harder it would be for them to win. As for the OP's comment on Canada. If China launched a suprise invasion it might be able to make a little ground but the invasion force would quickly be cut of from supplies and be forced to surrender. China has a large army. Unfortunately for China it's army doesn't have the navy to transport it far enough to project real power. Perhaps in 10 years time things will be different. Soldiers are replaced easily ships take years to build.

jetfire9000:

exactly.  To the guy who brought this post back from the dead, answer this:  "In what situation is it that China's forces are superior to European ones?"   IE, are you suggesting China can land an army on continental Europe?  They simply don't have the capacity to do that. China is still freewheeling on Western powers as they keep he oil and resources flowing. Fools need to remember, the biggest benefiter from Iraq was China.

Shining_brow:

Lord_Hanson, I don't think it would be possible to launch a 'surprise' attack. Any build-up of troops near any border are going to be very easily seen/detected.

And, where would they go? Russia? Thailand? Laos? North Korea? Try sending troops out west, via Tibet or Xinjiang? Maybe invade Mongolia... (those last 3 would be funny... as I suspect they'd end up fighting Chinese at their backs as well).

Any attempts to hit Japan would be immediately obvious (and thwarted).
